T'was the night before Christmas and all through the museum,
Not an airplane was flying or so it would seem.
When out on the tarmac there rose such a clatter
that all volunteers ran to see what’s the matter.
Midst snowflakes and starlight and a blue haze of smoke
sat an old wheezing relic that surely was broke.
Its wings sagged from flying countless times 'round the world
the old radial engines with smoke round them swirled.
Atop the old aircraft the canopy stirred
and slid back on its tracks as a tired motor whirred.
A harness released with an audible click,
A figure stood up, was it really St. Nick?
With jolly old voice and his curly white locks
He commanded the ramp rats to get him some chocks.
“I’ve a long way to go, many runways ahead,
before I'm back home asleep in my bed.
Top off the fuel tanks and clean the windscreen,
It’s best that I hurry, I don’t want to be seen.”
The volunteers scurried and wasted no time
they fueled and they cleaned till the plane nearly shined.
St. Nick buckled up in that seat way on top
called out to the crowd “please stand back and
CLEAR PROP!
On engine four, engine three, engine two, engine one,
Republic tower, this is St. Nick, I need clearance at once!”
He roared down the runway and climbed into the sky
then circled the field as we all waved good-bye.
We all stood in awe as the bomb bay doors parted
He passed o’er the field and bombardment soon started
There were gifts of all sizes and shapes raining down
Bags and boxes galore soon covered the ground
While from up in the sky he called out while in flight
“MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!”
