I wasn't going to write this but feel I should. I'm a little pissed writing a check today for a 4th starter restoration!!!
A year ago I bought a correct date coded starter from Chevy Cool for my '66. At the time my car was at a shop having a lot of work done and I had them include the starter install.
They put the Chevy Cool starter in and it didn't work. I then paid to have it removed and I paid to ship it to Chevy Cool.
I got a replacement starter and it did not work. I paid again to have it removed and shipped.
The third starter seemed to work but after a few hundred miles it began to fail as well. Very hard laboring start when hot.
The Chevy Cool owner and I had talked each time his stater failed. He had all kinds of excuses. He agreed to reimburse me for the money spent on shipping 2x and recognized I had paid to have his part installed 3x and removed 2x. I never heard from him again. He did not respond to any vm's after that.
Now, I have pulled his third starter out and sent it to Ken Bruno Motorsports who I know will do a top notch restoration. I forget how much Chevy Cool charged me for the first starter but after shipping, shop rates for 3 installs and 2 removals and the cost for KB Motorsports to restore the starter again I am now out about $1000. One very expensive experience with Chevy Cool.
I had some dealings with chevy cool and was very satisfied, I called them several times with different questions and each time I was treated very well and I have no reservations about using them again.
a starter is to easy to rebuild your self, and not much to them and fail. so what really failed when it would not start?
If I recall correctly the first two from Chevy Cool had an issue with the bendix engaging. The last one he sent me just began to labor to crank the car when hot and it had not seen many miles.
So the issue was found. I was told the wire field to the solenoid rubs on the armature. It was too close inside, the wire was rubbing. If that does not make sense then it is the way I wrote it down from the phone conversation. Over time it wore with contact and when hot it was causing the issue to occur. Like I wrote up top, this was my third starter from Chevy Cool and aside from sending two replacement starters that then had issues, they did nothing for all my down time, shop rates and shipping. I now have a Ken Bruno restored starter headed back to me with all new internals.
