You do not have to install them. You will get a DIC message every time you start it, but you can hit 'reset' and it goes away. You will NOT get any computer problems like reduced power or inability to turn off traction control, etc. We've never had TPMS sensors on our '99 and its on the track a lot & occasionally street driven with no issues.
I just replaced mine (TPMs) and had trouble with the readings. The DIC lost the config a day after replacing all four sensors. The code it output was "Low Pressure L Front" "Reduced Handling" "Maximum speed 55". Push reset and you get the alarm again for the next tire. Had to reset it four times (once for each tire) before the codes disappeared and the system quit chiming. Then it came back after a few miles of driving and I had to reset all four again! In Other Words...it is VERY annoying!
I understand why some people put them all in a PVC pipe, pressurize it, then carry it in the trunk - just to keep the DIC quiet!
Also, if you have a scanner, I understand you can disable the DIC from looking for the sensoer and quit thropwing an alarm.
BTW - Mine is an 2003. It war reprogrammed again and now all is well!
