Default Ansen Centers

I have a set of period correct (original) Ansen wheels... I would appreciate someone telling me the specific type (been researching them online lately, look like Sprint Mag I's, but I can not be sure).

I am looking for the matching Ansen center caps (the non-plastic type), I have a set of plastics, but would prefer metal.

Reply or PM with details please if you have or know how to source.

Thanks,
DS

The caps shown in these pictures are NOT what is currently on the vehicle, actually only the fronts have caps (the rears are too small for the I.D. and therefore are sitting in the interior floorboard) and all are plastic not metal.

I've been talking to a guy at AKH Vintage Wheels (Terry Rowe), trying to get some advice about my wheels.

http://www.akhwheels.com/

Here is the recent email exchange, can anyone here validate what he is saying ?

Hello -

Can you help me identify the wheels on this car ?

I recently purchased it from my uncle and I'm now looking for metallic center caps (chromed).

He says the wheels are original, period correct, Ansens - I'm not sure which style though (specifically, Mag I ?) maybe they are: U.S. Indy Slot ?.

The caps shown in the picture(s) are NOT what was supplied with the car, I have some Ansen plastic centers and would like to replace them w/ chromed METAL Ansen centers.

Also, to note the tire sizes are:

Fronts: 10” wide BFG P265 / 50 R15

Rears: 12” wide BFG P295 / 50 R15

I do know that the caps I have now only fit the front set of wheels, but the O.D. is too small for the rears (rear hole is bigger).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi John,
I understand your delema.

The rears are Ansen Sprint mag I's with a 3" center bore.

The fronts are ET with a 3 1/8th" bore.

I can supply the same looking caps as you have.

A set/4 with decals in stainless steel caps with the Ansen US Indy or ET decals installed on them (your choice) for $60 a set delivered within the US.

Or if your caps are good for use I can send you four of any of these decals for $25 total delivered within the US.

Hi John,

Oh and we stock new washers and lugnuts correct for your ET wheels. These run $3 each lug and $3 each washer.

Also the Ansen lugs and washers.@ $4/pr. Freight is free within the US.

Thanks for the quick reply, are you telling me that I have two DIFFERENT sets of wheels on my car ?

Fronts are ET (which are NOT Ansens) and rears are Ansen Spints ? These are different manufacturers or different styles within the Ansen line ?

Are you making this suggestion because I have incorrect (non-matching) hardware on my wheels ?

Or are you suggesting matching hardware that are wheel specific (same mfg.) ?

Hi John,

Two different manufacturers as you noted bore size different and they accept two different styles of lug nuts and washers.

That is strange, as when I re-examined the wheels just now they look practically identical (except two things: a) the size, obviously and b) the bolt hole counter-bores [front appear slotted counter sunk, and rears appear round(er) counter sunk].

Curious, as I don't have much knowledge of these wheels / style / era, seems strange that they are identical in style, shape and dimensions [including casting, machining, profile and window cut outs]; but are from two different manufacturers.

One other thing that is interesting is that the front plastic caps I have fit, but the rears do not (meaning that the rear bore is larger, but the cap O.D.'s are all the same size).

I need to do some more research, but I do know that I do not like the plastic set I have.

Hi John,

I can show you 14 different manufacturers that built that same style of wheel just slightly different.

Originally hcame with push in from the front plastic caps. two different bores by 1/8" That I'm sure of if your rear wheels have Ansen cast into the back of them as I assume.

If not they are Western wheels and that will be cast into the back. That might be why they have the near same 3 1/4" bore.
