Personally, I think it's because it's "fashionable", just like women's clothes. Have to change it up once in a while, to stimulate sales. (Yeah, I know there are some performance gains to be had....)
I think the WORST looking thing thing is some finely restored 60s-70s era muscle car, including Corvettes, with 18"-20" wheels and tires. makes them look "cartoonish", IMHO.....
Hey, I just want a drag wheel setup, but since you can't put 15" wheels on a C5 your $500. set of wheels become the need to have a $2500. set of CCW wheels to get that drag setup. At that price, I will pass.

Not to take a shot at CCW, as they're a good buch of guys, but for a "lo-buck" drag set up, how about the "GTO spare tire wheels" for the front, and a 15" or 16" drag tire deal for the rear?

We have 18x12" Low Pressure Cast Alloy's (same as the OEM wheel manufacturing process) on sale / in stock for Drag Radials. $549 Black / $649 Chrome. Free S&H.
I tried 3 different 16" wheels on the front of my 2001 and no go on any of them, I even tried an aftermarket 17" ARE that came of a 92 Vet and it would not fit on the front.

Unfortunately that's pretty much the only way to get any decent performance tires. I'm about ready to throw the computer at a wall trying to find something better than a Pirelli P4000 for my 66. 205/75-15 is almost impossible to find, and 215/70-15 (close enough) isn't much better.
Fortunately I've got a couple of months left to search, but this is pathetic.
