I am running 17 x 9.5" wheels with a 4.5" back set and 275/40/17 Kumo tires on an 81. No midifications necessary. Bolt on and run.
17" wheels look great on a c-3.

Dennis,
The critical piece is the 9.5" width and the 4.5" back set and the 17" diameter. They do not rub and I have lowered the car and run it auto cross.
If you were to run a taller tire than the 275-40-17, it could rub.
I am also running 1.7 degrees negative camber.
There is a chance you could run a 16-10 with a 4.75" back set but you would need to bolt them up and check for potential problems.
Good luck,
Bronco rider
