I've done some searching on the Corvette Forum site but haven't found a specific or much discussed issue regarding tire longevity versus time. A couple years ago I purchased an '03 Z06 from a friend of a friend. The car, at the time, had about 8,000 miles and is now nearing 10,000. I don't drive it too often and neither did the previous owner. Anyway, the tires are original and I'm wondering how important is time as compared to wear. They still look great but are obviously 8 years old or so. Is there a definitive time threshold for replacement? The car is garaged kept and I live in Las Vegas so cold weather isn't an issue but obviously hot weather is.
Thank you.
The current line of thinking is that tires have a "life cycle" of 7-8 years, max. However, like you, I have a low mileage C-5, and don't plan on changing out tires simply because they're 8 years old, with 15,000 miles on them. I'm not rich!!
However, in my case, I do live in the snow belt, and store the car for winter. During that period, I remove the aftermarket wheels and newer tires, and put on the OE wheels and worn tires for the car to "hibernate" on. The good wheels/tires go in the basement fo rthe winter.
In your case, however, I'd be concerned with the weight of the car on stationary tires for extended periods of time in high heat conditions...
