Will a 17x11 wheel if in an 87 vert spare tire holder
I thought that I remembered reading that a 17x11 wheel will not fit in a 87 vert spare tire holder. For that matter will a 17x9.5 wheel fit. I want to upgrade to 17 inch ZR 1 style wheels but I don't want any surprises if I ever get a flat. A forum member had some 16x8 ZR 1 style wheels for sale. The stock saw blades are 16x9.5. I am not sure about going from 9.5 to 8 wheels. Will P255/56ZR16 tires fit 16X8 wheels? If I upgrade I would prefer wider tires but it would be nice to not have to buy new tires if I don't have to. Any comments?
Thanks

Here is my .02 cents, for what it's worth. My dad has an 87 Roadster, with the 9.5 rears.
1. No I don't think the 17x11 would fit the spare tire holder. A 9.5 yes, but I think it will only accomodate up to the 9.5.
2. I would be hesitant to go 16 x 8, but yes, I believe the 255's would still fit.
3. My suggestions would be to go with 17 x 9.5's on all 4 corners, but remember you can't get the common 56mm offset rims. You need a 38mm offset, which are a little harder to find.

90-95 ZR-1's came with a plastic bag to hold one of the rear tires if it went flat. The tire/wheel had to be placed in the rear cargo area. The C4 spare tire carrier was not made to hold a 315/35 tire on the 11" rim. One reason that the 96 Grand Sport verts has the 275/40 tires on 9/5" wide wheels was that there would have been no room for a 315/35 tire to fit inside the vert cabin. The GS coupe versions came with the same bag that the ZR-1 had.
The 275/40-17 tire mounted on a 17x 9 1/2" wheel is very close to the same size as a 255/50-16 tire mounted on a 16x9 1/2" wheel so if you go that route, the spare tire carrier will hold that size.
As far as availability of ZR-1-type wheels with the correct 38mm offset to fit an 84-87, go here: http://www.afswheels.com/v2/ecommerc...ayproducts.asp Another company is OE Wheels in Florida. Both companies will have wheel and tire packages on eBay and you can get some great deals for wheels and tires for under $1K. Do a search on "Corvette wheels".
A 16x8 wheel was never offered as a ZR-1 style wheel for Corvette. It is most likely a Camaro wheel and the offset would be wrong and may not even fit because of caliper interference. A 255 tire really needs a 8.5 minimum wheel width to fit properly.

Not sure aabout what will fit in the spare tire carrier, but I can tell you that a 255/50/16 tire will fit fine on a 16x8 rim. I had this size all around on an old Iroc I had. They fit great and looked pretty mean.

A 17x11 wheel with a 315/35 will not fit into the stock spare tire carrier.
