I’m new here and I have a numbers matching 1969 L71 corvette coupe project that I’m looking to find a new home for. I thought that this would be the best place to see what people thought that it could possibly bring on BAT or something similar, or if someone were in the market on here they could reach out as well.
This has been an Eastern Canada car all its life.
It has been off the road since 1982 and has 58,xxx original miles.
- 427-435 hp tri power
- M21 4 speed
- 3:70 posi
- Monza red
- Red leather interior
- motor, trans, and rear end rebuilt under previous ownership
​​​​​​- chassis has been completely restored
​​​​​​- new stock exhaust
​​​​​​- some new interior pieces (door panels, dash pad, carpet, shifter bezel, etc)
- rechromed bumpers
- new chrome valve covers with drippers
- frame and bird cage are mint
- would new a paint job as there are scratches and the hood is in primer
- I have 99% of everything to put car back together (maybe 100% 🤷‍♂️)

thanks for clarifying that for me. Yes, the car is in Dartmouth Nova Scotia. I’m looking to get my investment out of it at this point. I don’t know if it’s high or on par, or completely out to lunch to tell you the truth. If I get $55,000 US then it would be on to the next owner, if not then it will stay on the lift until I’m ready to restore it. I have 5 other cars in the line ahead of it so it would be sitting for some time. Edit: I’d be open to offers too. I’d probably be dead before I get it on the road🤷‍♂️

 

55k is WAY out there on a C3 thats not done. but thats just me.

 

Unfortunately thats what I have into. If it sells, it sells. If not, no big deal. I appreciate the input though.

It being the real deal L71 can make the price climb for sure, so maybe I am wrong. I am not a expert or collector.

 

Don’t get me wrong, I asked for input so I didn’t take it as a dig. I actually do appreciate the input. It helps me understand where it should be. Realistically, it’s only worth what someone else is willing to pay, so I’m at the mercy of the market in the end. Cheers, Jamie

You mentioned perhaps listing your car on BAT.
While BAT certainly likes 427/435 cars, isn't it generally 'finished cars' that do well on that site?

Its named BringaTrailer for a reason. While today's listed cars are mostly finished high-end Euro cars, there was a time this L71 would have been perfect for BaT. I agree with your comment that BaT no longer is suitable for a unfinished project. The BaT commenters would not be supportive or helpful, in general. While you get some constructive comments from the experts that frequent BaT, most of the commenters are just looking to either increase their post count or stir up trouble.

 

My 2 cents and having just completed a 69 big block L36 project that took me 3+ years I would say this. This is a great project and a L71 project is always worth doing, Plus it is red!. Given you need new paint (15K+) and somebody has to put this puppy together, I think the value is more like the mid to high twenties. And I almost always lose money on buying, restoring and selling C3's LOL's so what do I know. Great Corvette project and good luck with whatever you decide.

I also can relate to the 6ft rule. My wife told me the other day IF I die and leave her all these Corvette projects I still have to complete, then I will be in a LOT of trouble. HMMM... makes you think.....

 

Only because you asked for opinions, not a bashing, but $55K is way off target & yes, out to lunch. It's not even a drop top. I was thinking the same $25 - maybe $28 If i was uneducated & didn't know any better & maybe if I had bigger ***** then I do possibly $30K max. Unless your thinking $55,000 Canadian, then your a little bit closer to reality, but still off. The pictures posted do not look like a frame off full restoration, highly detailed, under carriage that I'm accustomed to seeing. Maybe those were the before pictures not after New paint for $15K especially red is being very kind & very gentle to say the least. No mention if it's a side pipe car which adds some value, or if you have any type of documentation ? Getting a car outa Canada in pieces into the USA is also a PITA & will discourage a lot of buyers unless it's a bargain !!! There are plenty of completed, highly detailed, cars with documents / owner history in the price range your asking. This one still appears to be a fairly large project. I personally would pass unless i'm stealing it. Wishing you luck, hope you can unload it & not lose too much. Everyone of us has made mistakes for different reasons, **** happens, & we move on. I would post pictures of the trim tag, engine stamping and vin tag for potential buyers. Also any factory paperwork you have for the car.

 

I bought a project black 69 L71 about 4 years ago.
Chassis done, engine, trans, and rear rebuilt, car painted, chrome work done, exhaust, brakes, suspension, upholstery done, and all the parts to complete it and I paid 35k.

With that being said, I do believe the solid lifter BB cars have appreciated in the last 4 years.
And it’s a great color combo also.

$55 is probably too much.

 

If you look at the May 28, 2024 | 07:55 PM add from “RMVette” Matthews NC, an entire L46 4-speed, very well done project, with awesome documentation, resulted in $38K, sure it wasn’t L89, but… yes that was two years ago. I could be wrong to say that prices on these cars have not really gone up since 2024, but my impression is that you would have had a better chance two years ago to sell at a higher price maybe.



It is, for you, worth it to do a concourse restore, if you don't cheap out, do every detail 100% every nut a bolt has to be perfect, all the stickers, chalk marks, 100% new condition you can fetch a very good dollar Canadian or US. No one truly wants to spend $50 on a car that they are going to spend another $175K to get to where this car should be. Obviously L89 manual is awesome... since I am interpreting that your time is less important that asking price, definitely go for it... the amount of time and aggravation that it takes to get it running correctly versus getting it 100% at your stage of the game is not as significant as if you had a running car. What many are going to worry about is electrical system vacuum system, body condition frame condition... the pictures you send do not seen represent the statements you make as to the changes you have done, but maybe that is just me. Daily driver or concourse level, what is your time worth. Here everyone is thinking $200/hour restoration labor + parts + storage, even if it is your own time still $200/hour minimum, so starting at $50k+ the car would cost far more that it is worth. But I think that this car will only go up in value if you do it right. There are tons of corvettes out there now, that is why doing a frame off restore makes sense now, 10 years from now it will be much harder to find parts and cars, the value proposition is still there. On the other hand, the Resto-Mod may be the way to go for you since high value frame-off only really makes sense with a documented very low mileage unicorn. Starting with a powerplant like the mythical L89 is potentially significant. But Resto Mods can easily take on the name Risk-O-Mods… Obviously you want to make money on this car, so do the work, you only have a core cost of $35k so what do you have to lose. Perhaps the most important thing in all of this for the very serious buyer is documenting the bird cage, everything else can be fixed, “looks mostly okay” is not the same as “brand new condition”.

Just my 2-cents worth, but in the spirit of helping you to perhaps consider a set of targets to choose from and shoot for. I for one am really looking forward to see what you are doing with the car, consider starting a thread and keeping us posted as to project from start to finish! I have thought about financing a build with a go-fund-me paradigm...

 

This car might have a lot going for it. If it does in fact have the born with drivetrain that’s good. Also, if it was a Canadian car since new it will have verifiable documents as GM of Canada has the records. And red on red is a big plus. Post up the trim tag and engine pad, that always generates interest. Good luck with the sale!
