Default ZF6 Fluid change update

It’s been a few days and I’ve been driving it every day since I changed out the fluid. I used AMSOIL syncromesh. I can say since the change, not one shift in to third gear has felt notchy at all. Definite improvement.

How many bottles did you use to fill it up?

2.2 bottles..
and as I was getting right near the amount I thought should be enough, fluid started coming out the fill just like I’ve seen.
so it seems like it’s almost impossible to overfill.

Thanks for bringing this thread back to life, timing is perfect. I just bought 3 qt's of Amsoil (expensive) and a couple replacement VW caps (just in case)...did you have any issues loosening the caps? I'm pretty sure mine has never been opened up. Did you just need a ratchet or did you need anything like an impact? I'm not looking to damage the threads or housing so I'm a bit paranoid about it

Just use a long handle 3/8 or 1/2 breaker bar. You'll be fine.

No issues getting them out. I was able to use my ratchet. I used the 1/2 drive, easy…the only I happened to have was the drain had been scraped and the inside of the head where the 17mm Allen goes was filled in with metal. Hate to say it but I used a pipe wrench on it and worked it out. The outside bottom of the drain plug is mangled but it’s doing its job..can you tell me the part number for the VW plugs you got?
I need to,order some…thanks

Part # WHT001937 (Fill/Drain Plug)
WHT001937 - Screw Plug - Genuine Volkswagen Part (vw.com)

You should be able to pick one up at a local dealer (the price seems to have doubled), mine were only $5 each

What fluid were you using before you switched to Amsoil

My third gear is a little notchy at times. I changed the fluid to Valvoline Synchromesh and felt the same. Then I switched to Royal Purple and it improved but sometimes the notchiness of 3rd gear is there at low speeds but if I get on it hard there's no notchiness going into 3rd and it's smooth.

I'm thinking if I should try AMS oil? Has anyone used Royal Purple then switched to AMS oil? Was there a big significant difference?

With mine, it took a few days but if I catch third gear just right, I’ll still get that notchiness. Like you said, if I’m getting on it then zero issues and smooth shifting. If I’m just taking it easy, it used to bind up a lot more often but now after the fluid change I’ve got to catch it just right to get it to feel notchy. Whenever I’m kind of expecting it, it doesn’t happen..I’m trying to nail down exactly when it does. But honestly it’s not really a problem. Now it happens so infrequently. May just be a characteristic of the trans. It’s certainly nothing I’m thinking of yanking it out for. Oh and I think I mentioned it earlier but I am using AMSOIL Synchromesh.

I have driven 3 low mile zf6 cars. I mean under 12k miles. All stock cars. 3rd being the notchiest was common theme I noticed between them all. Friend of mine is a c4 nut like me.

1 was a 96 lt4 vert
1, a 96 gs
And a 90 zr-1

And yes, it seems like the harder you want to drive, the smoother the shifts are.

I also picked up 3 bottles of the Amsoil for my fluid change. Seems to be the way to go.

Yes I also used Amsoil Synchromesh. I used a cheap harbor freight hand pump and dang that worked great. This job was so easy, I guess because I didn't have issues with the hex plugs...
