Hawk ceramic pads have the same friction compound, from new till last remaining friction material. It will not vary by age, I suspect your booster may be leaking they are plastic and can crack loosing vacuum assistance increasing pedal effort to stop car. Check the one way valve at booster, it will hold enough vacuum with engine off for a couple of assisted brake operations. When engine is shut off check by angling or pullung the booster hose a little to front of car to check the valve / booster has kept vacuum. Should hiss when pulling the hose allowing the valve to angle inside the booster grommet breaking vacuum seal.
Bleed your brakes to ensure no air or moisture are causing problems, like seized pistons will result in no brakes as well if the car is rarely used. You should bleed the brakes every few years at a minimum, brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) ..

I like Porterfield, others like other brands, I'm sure.

As for friction material aging out, I've not heard of such a thing.

I have heard of ceramic pads deteriorating in various ways when they get "too hot."

Could anything have gotten on the pads?

Are you certain the front brakes are still getting full hydraulic pressure from the brake system?
