C5 Corvette: Specifications by Trim

The C5 Corvette offers a full range of high-end features and equipment that come standard or as an upgrade option for select trim packages.

This article applies to the C5 Corvette (1997-2004).

The C5 Corvette first arrived on the automotive market back in 1997. This sleek, muscular sports car marked a major change from predecessor generations like the C4, which focused more on handling and braking than horsepower. Built with high-end components and panels, the C5 joins speed and precision to elevate the promise and power of a beautifully crafted, high-performance sports car. While the C5 boasts outstanding ride, handling and capability, especially while maneuvering hard corners, many car buyers will be pleased to know it also offers cutting-edge upgrade options.

Component Breakdown

Stability Control System

The C5 features a stability control system that comes standard on the vehicle. Special components include a brake pressure modulator, steering wheel angle sensor and lateral accelerometer for enhanced stability and balance.

Advanced Suspension System

The C5 features a range of outstanding suspension packages from which to choose: FE4 suspension comes standard only on the Z06 and is not available on either the coupe or the convertible. This type of suspension provides a more "sporty" feel to the drive. FE1 or "base" suspension is standard on the coupe and convertible, while F45 or "active" and Z51 or "performance" suspension are both optional.

High-performance Wheels

The C5 coupe and convertible both feature cast aluminum wheels in sparkling silver, and the Z06 features forged aluminum wheels in light grey. Forged aluminum (polished) and cast magnesium wheels are available on the coupe and convertible.

Scheduled Maintenance

Change engine oil and replace air filter every 10,000 miles. If the vehicle is driven primarily in heavy city traffic or over hilly terrain, have the transmission fluid and filter changed at 50,000 miles. Inspect the engine accessory drive belt at 60,000 miles and change spark plugs at 100,000 miles.

Common Questions

Which body types are available?

The C5 is available in three distinct body styles: two-door hatchback coupe, two-door convertible and two-door fixed roof coupe.

What are the differences between the two-door convertible and two-door hatchback coupe?

Buyers should be aware of several differences between the C5 convertible and the C5 hatchback coupe. The convertible features a spacious trunk, which can buffer the sound of road and wheel noise for a noticeably quieter cabin. The hatchback coupe, on the other hand, features a hatch, as the name suggests, which can amplify road and rear wheel noise while on the road. It also wafts sound directly into the cabin for a sometimes noisier ride, especially when driving at top speeds or over rough, uneven terrain.

How does the handling on the Z06 compare to that of the coupe?

The Z06 has bespoke suspension upgrades including the shock absorbers, suspension bushings, and different spring rates for the leafs. A Z06 is noticeably sharper than either the coupe or convertible, though a fixed roof coupe model (i.e. no removable upper glass) can come close to the Z06's handling potential.

Common Issues

The top latch on the hatchback coupe makes 'popping' sounds when the vehicle is in motion

The C5 coupe can be noisier than the C5 convertible due to a popping or creaking noise that sometimes emanates from the front latch. This intrusive popping noise can be fixed or reduced by applying a premium automotive lubricant to the rollers and strike plate. The latch handle may also need to be re-tightened.

Panel replacement

The C5 features fiberglass body panels, which may need to be replaced occasionally, depending on how the vehicle is driven. Keep in mind, the C5 (irrespective of body style) sits low to the ground. Front spoiler and air dam damage is possible due to scrapping and other contact with hard surfaces.

Climate control numbers may not be visible on the LED dash

If climate control numbers and gauges are not visible on the LED dash, replace the module at a cost of $300 or less.
