Nice Package

It was way back in the spring of last year when word of a possible Stingray R package for the C8 Corvette first surfaced. The idea is to emulate the style of C8.R racer, which competes in the IMSA's GTLM class, for a road-going version of Chevy's Corvette. Since then, a couple of cars fitted with these parts have shown up here and there, the latest being this red example that was captured at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona by Nigel Scott Dobbie and posted over at GM Authority.

Noticeable Changes

There are several noticeable styling elements present on this car, and they differ slightly from what we've seen on previous prototypes. The most obvious is the red and white "Stingray R" lettering present on the aero just ahead of the rear wheels, as well as a two-tone hood stripe.

Slight Differences

That hood stripe has the Corvette racing team's mascot, "Jake," ghosted into it for a pretty cool look. What this car does not have, however, are the Jake center caps, red mirrors, and Stingray R lettering on its front splitter that the previous car did.

Muddy Waters

It's unclear if this particular car just doesn't feature those elements or if GM has since revised the Stingray R package and removed them. However, it seems like we're getting pretty close to this becoming an actual option for buyers, so we should know pretty soon.

Leaked Materials

We first learned of the existence of the Stingray R package thanks to a leaked order guide last year, which featured a few different paint color and stripe options. The Stingray R package was included as well and described as a graphics and wheel cap option.

Production Woes

However, nearly a year has passed since that document leaked, and owners still can't order the package. It's unclear what the holdup is, but given the C8's production woes in the months since, GM likely has chosen to push it until it and its suppliers are back to normal in that regard.

Pending Popularity

Regardless, when it is available, we believe that the Stingray R package will prove to be quite popular. It's a nice addition to the already great-looking C8, and truthfully, who doesn't want a little piece of Jake on their car?
