Default C6 - runs hot - oil cooler install

I have an 06 Z51 car with the OEM cooler. However, the car runs hot for some reason. 240 on-track. Replaced T-stat, radiator is clean so it is an unknown reason why.

My oil follows the high temp so I need a bigger oil cooler I guess. Recommended part to use and any pictures of an install?
Thanks

240? My bone stock car did 260-270 on a normal run and 280-290 at max revs. The motors are built to run at high temperature, it's just the way it is. Heck, it cruises at 210F on the highway at 76mph with AC on

That ain't hot, that's operating temperature. You should worry if your oil temp's reach upwards of 290-300F. Without an oil cooler, my C5 ran Grattan two days in a row, all day, and the hottest I saw was 273F. That's in 90F weather, both days. Spend your cash on bigger brakes and sticky tires. You're fine.

I'm with Randy, is the 240 water or oil?

If that is your water temp...then you are in need of a larger radiator. If that is your oil temp, I would run a little thicker than stock oil but 240 is nothing to be worried about with synthetic oils.

Yes it is the WATER ... I thought that was obvious but I wasn't clear.

When it gets hot the oil follows and it will creep right up to 300 (oil temp) even with short shifting. This is at VIR as well so there is a lot of air flow too.

Norbert and I looked at the radiator and all appears to be fine. The AC condenser is in front of it and has the normal dents from small rocks. Other folks do not seem to have this issue and the car should not do this.

Car is stock also. Z51

Maybe those "normal dents" are blocking more air flow than you think. Try this to fix:

Now I am with Anthony,

You need a larger radiator with a built in Oil cooler. The stock stuff works for 90 percent of the Corvette population. But you are either driving harder, hanging in a gear in a corner instead of up shifting before the corner.

You can try running more water in the radiator, with some water wetter. But if you are getting that hot right away, then I don't think you can get away with the quick fix.

There was a guy in a C6 Z06 that had to stop because his car hit 240 or 260 water temp. My car was at 220-230F all day on track

Some simple things you can do to lower the water temp...

Lower the % amount of anti-freeze and raise % of water. Water does a much better job cooling than anti-freeze. I only have about 10-15% coolant (if that) in mine.

When it's really hot out there, turn on the heater and put the fan on high. The small "radiator" used for the heater will dissipate some heat.

Make sure all the gaps around the radiator are sealed up so ALL the air is going thru it...and ensure both the condensor and radiator are clean.

To really do it right though, think about the Ron Davis radiator, a big oil cooler, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 50/50 mix on the water so I can change that and I will look at making sure there are no air leaks.

Not driving the car hard with the RPM. I seldom will go down to 2nd and usually try to shift around 5500 because of the oil.

Thanks

240 is HIGH!

I usu shift ~3-400 shy of the redline and am running 210-220 h20 temps all day. My oil is usu ~273.

Do the coolant first, as a lot of the other guys have suggested.

You will love your car more if you can rev past 5500 rpm.

You have been racing showroom stock too long if you are turning on the heater full blast on the hot days

This does work!!! Towing also in the hills!!!

you might try adding a Zo6 oil cooler to your Z51, it will bring temp down 30-40 degrees
its an easy fix.

Will the Z06 oil cooler replace the Z51 one, or does it add onto it?

It's a replacement as far as i know. You can probably find one for $300 - $350 if you look for a used one on here. I just recently had one installed but have yet to test it on the track.

I am all ears for your results as I think the lower oil temps will save a lot of wear and tear.

I am with Chris, Randy and Anthony

about 10-15% dex, remainder in water and 2 bottles of water wetter.

Never see coolant temps about 220 now, no matter how hard I run

Oil temps stay in the 230-240 range. I do have a separate oil cooler, and run 15-w50
