Cmp - nasa - 5/1 & 5/2
I attended, my first NASA event this past weekend at CMP. I really like the event format and meet some great C5 guys. The track was really slick this weekend, but drivinhard managed to get in a 140.xx on Sat for the win. Scott and Charles were 2nd and third on Sat, but I don't remember their times as I was still in shockovert eh 104.xx!
I think Mark won Sunday also with a 141.xx, but I have no idea who was second and third. I just know it was not me. These guys are fast!

Like I said in the other thread, it was really nice to meet you guys and to have so many vettes in TTA. Canrnage was the name of the game for me this weekend. Something mechanically let go in the clutch on the first practice lap on Saturday. I had to post a time since practice doesn't count so I went out later and forced the issue with the gearbox and was able to use 3rd and sometimes 4th.
I managed to squeak out a 1.42xx to nab 2nd place.
Sunday was even worse. First lap first session I twisted it a little too hard trying to ride 3rd down the front stretch and hurt the old tired motor. Billowing smoke trailed me as I tried to do a cool down lap in the paddock. I thought I was on fire, but it was coming from the left bank exhaust pipe. Loaded up at 9:30am and headed home with a 1.440x so Charles probably beat me since there were 5 more sessions in the day (I'll have to wait the customary 5-7 days for mylaps to update).
Got home and found a broken pushrod in #5. Will pull the heads sometime this week.

Best part of the weekend was my student (a friend) shaking down his newly purchased AI Mustang in DE1. We go to pass a honda on the inside heading into the kink, and I look over and he's holding the quick release steering wheel in his hand like he's trying to find a part number on it
Add "secure wheel to steering shaft" on the dash pre-flight checklist
This was only trumped later in the lunch TT session on sunday when I was out sliding around on the nitto's, w/ Varkwso on my six in a T1 car on A6's. i was waiting for the pass coming out of the kink, but all I saw in the rearview was a red missile go straight, off into the sand pit into a huge cloud of plum. Another victim of a quick release steering wheel that ejected itself.
You guys are gonna get somebody killed
Something broke in my clutch/throw-out bearing. There are missing pieces and the sides of the pressure plates have fresh impact marks as does the inside of the bellhousing.
Dang now I am forced to yank the 51 lb anvil unit and put in the 13 lb Quartermaster toggle switch

Drivinhard's post is exactly why I have not put my quick release on my wheel. I doub't that I need to it to be removable.
Glad you guys had a good time... get the cars ready for RA next month.

What the heck was going on down there with steering wheels?
In addition to the two steering wheel incidents Mark mentioned, I know of one other guy in a Spec E30 that had his steering wheel come off this weekend. He posted the video on another forum of it coming off in T9, he got it back on before T10 and never lifted.

I'm seriously considering sticking with my OE wheel now. I found out just how fast I can exit when I thought I was on fire Sunday and it was faster than I thought.

just keep a pair of vice grips tucked in the console, you can bite the steering shaft with them and steer if your wheel comes off

I got involved in TT when I lived up in NY in the early 2000s. When I moved back to GA and we got the house finished and I had a life again, I started searching for TT stuff and THSCC was one of the first clubs I saw. I didn't have a 4 pt roll bar though, so I did not pursue it.
I got involved with NASA's TT after a call/chat with sperkins
I'd love to run with you guys, although it's tough just doing one of these a month (schedule/time/kids/$$)

wow I didn't realize how close the Viper duo were, that's close! I love running behind Larry, he's my favorite rabbit.
With 4 stickers, cooler air, continued car tweaks, and getting up on the wheel more, there's a 39 out there. Maybe a 38 if the moon is in the right position for a little "gravity tug".
Need a coaching session with Skeen or Farmer.

Drivinhard, I don't think you need any coaching, what really makes you go fast is racing wheel-to-wheel for several season's, which unfortunately means a lot of bent fenders, and even more money than you already likely spending. Some things can only be taught by doing.

The track walk helped me a lot on Saturday. I couldn't believe the elevation changes that you can't see from in the car. The track was also a lot cleaner/sand free than I expected. I altered my line quite a bit in 3&4 and I really think that's where I gained most of my time on my fast lap.
