Northstar is local so I ended up getting a great deal on a 2015 OMP suit

I'm no expert, but having purchased a new suit recently I offer the following:
If at all possible, try on various brands. While the size charts are a pretty good guide, suits from different companies fit differently.
Ditto what was said above about layers. Don't let that be your guide. I think that the best things to look for are an SFI rating of 3.2/5 and then weight, generally expressed as grams per sq. meter. Lighter is better, but also more expensive.
I tried on a 400gr. Sparco that looked and fit great, but felt like I was wearing a sleeping bag. I walked out into the sunshine and felt like I was going to melt. I ended up spending much more for a 230 gr. OMP and am very glad that I made the investment.
Finally, there are deals out there. I saved 40% by buying a discontinued model. Google is your friend.

although the risk/danger may not be as high in HPDE vs Racing it's not a zero probability.
I would say if you are running in HPDE 1 maybe save your money as you may find out driving fast on a track isn't for you, but if you've moved up than you must like it and pushing things harder. So why not protect yourself.

Fire doesn't care if your racing, in hpde, tt, hill climbs, or club racing. i ware my suit to DE events. i get laughed at because it's not required. that kind of attitude is what gets people killed.

I had very good luck and found one of last years practice suits sold buy a top sports car driver local off ebay. Was nice enough to let me stop by and try it on.
Also had brand new nomex underwear from someone not his sponsor anymore.

The farther down the food chain your level of motorsports is the more you need to take care of your self safety wise. Competing in Cup, F1,Indy? you could get away with a Jimmy Buffet shirt n flip flops. If there is a problem in your state of the art race car you will be surrounded by a dozen trained responders in seconds.
On the other hand, Who will be there for you when your production chassis is wrapped around a tree at some hole in the wall track doing test n tune?

If you can find one in your size, this site offers some the best closeout deals on Sparco or Alpinestars:

This suit did its job. From the guy who wore this suit: "Remember, fire burns just as hot on a test day as it does on a race day, so wear all your gear."

Melting Slicks
I just bought a OMP One EVO $1700.00 suit for $1000.00 this is one of the lightest suits you can buy. Once I put it on, compared to the other suits!! I could not take it off.
This site has them at $1071.00 JD
A lot of shops are closing out stuff before the end of the season.
