Default Water pump replacement. What kind of sealant to use on the gaskets and bolt threads?

The last time i replaced a water pump was several years ago on an old Camaro i had. On that car i only used the gaskets and no sealant on the gaskets or threads on the bolts for the water pump

Since the bolts for the water pump goes into the coolant on the engine block i suppose i should use sealant on the threads on the 4 bolts
Also use sealant on both sides on the gaskets for the water pump

I have to kind of selants on the shelf and that is Permatex Supra Blue and Locktite MR 5922 if i can use any of those?
I know that the Locktite MR 5922 is ment to be used with gaskets but i do nnot think i can use it on the threads on the bolts for the water pump

Any suggestions on what to do and what sealant to use whhen replacing the water pump?

The pictures below is of the sealants i have. The last picture is instructions on how to use the Locktite sealant

I really dont want to take the water pump off again(do this job 2 times)because of any leaks after i have installed the new water pump

I don't recall what I used, I'm sure it was a Permatex product, but I used only a dab on the gskets to hold them in place. Not sure what I put on the bolt threads. Dennis

Water is water, I use teflon pipe dope on the bolt threads and glue the gasket to the block with Permatex 2 on Indian Head shellac. Never have a leak.

Thread sealer and Permatex #2 have been my standby for longer than I care to remember

I like Gasgacinch on gaskets. Very easy clean up later on.

I've always used that messy, stringy, molasses like Indian Head shellac. But there are better products out now, especially for high heat applications. Check out this Permatex site: https://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/...sket-sealants/

I can certainly agree with that.

And it has been working for me for over 50 years.

Permatex #2 is the best way to go.
On water pumps it can be re-torqued without any problems.
Silicone RTV should be avoided.

There are many sealants out there, like Permatex #2, which will do an excellent job sealing water pump gaskets. Make sure to remove all old gasket and sealer residue from the mating surfaces and apply sealant to both sides of the new gaskets.

When it comes to thread sealer for the through bolt holes, I recommend ARP Thread Sealer. I’ve used it to seal through hole threads into coolant and oil with excellent results. From the ARP spec sheet “These PTFE based sealers have a rust and corrosion inhibitor. In aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and plastic, they deliver a flexible, leakproof seal against coolants, water, gasoline, natural gas, and LPG. These sealers will be effective from -30 to 550 degrees F, and have a sealant range of 10,000 psi.”

Yea, I also use ARP thread sealer.

But I no longer use Permatex RTV, years ago I switched over to Permatex "The Right Stuff".

Haven't had a water or oil leak since.

Another guy for the non-hardening Permatex #2. The only thing I would even consider using on a C1 like I have, where the water pump holds the engine in the car.

I use it extensively on tapered pipe threads.

I tried using it on head studs and had massive coolant leaks. Never again!!!

The Right Stuff is simply amazing. Pricey, but well worth it!

The Toyota black sealer is basically Right Stuff in a tube. Excellent. But not for threaded studs or gaskets that need to move a little!

Another excellent (perhaps similar) product is Loctite #565. It is a smooth white paste that contains teflon, and is not lumpy.

I have used it both at home as well as in tough service in the chemical plants throughout the years.

I learned when I was young to actually glue the gaskets with contact cement to the pump before you go to install it, and use one of the permatexes on the other side when you mount it. Thread sealer for water jacket bolts. It'll never move on you that way, and the next time you change it the gaskets will be stuck to the old pump and not the block.

I do the same with valve covers using a light coat of grease on the other side so they come off easy and go back on the same.
