Start of my 1970 LT1 Vert Body off restoration
Hello All,
Local Corvette friends had suggested to me to put pictures on the forum as I start to restore my LT1. This is going to be my retirement project. Every part comes off this LT1 to be rebuilt, painted chromes or replaced. It looks like this restore is going to be a long slow process. The only help for now will be this forum. I have a good car to start with, shows 46k miles on the speedometer ‘no’ it’s not correct due to the ware of the pedals I see . It is Cortez Silver with Black leather interior. He had it rebuilt about 25 years ago and put headers on it. The engine is very tight and the car handles better than my 68 L71. Thank God he kept all the original parts that he changed, except for the Smog system. He could not remember where it was. I will looking for one of those. All the major parts are all correct. The engine, transmission, carb, intake. TI system drive train, ect.. Could not find any major damage to the frame or the body form any accidents. The body has some rust but nothing sever that I can’t have fixed. I bought it from the second owner who had it for the last 35 years. He said it basically sat for the last 5 years. Had a repaint on it about 33 years ago.
Here is the link for the pictures.

Any help will be appreciated; this is my first body off and can use all the help that’s available.
Thanks All,
Nelson007

Hi Nelson,
A silver 1970 LT-! Convertible..... WOW!!! VERY nice looking project!
It looks like it will be a great car when you're finished.
I enjoyed looking at all your Photobucket pictures.
I'm curious where the car came from?
There's a fellow in Connecticut that's been running an LT-! survey for many years. I'm sure he'd be pleased to have the VIN information from your car to add to his survey if he doesn't already have it.
Good Luck... any bloody knuckles yet?
Regards,
Alan

Hello Alan,
This car came from up state NY. He moved down here about 10 years ago. He kept the car in a storgage place the whole time while he was here. He works for one of my customers in Pa. I will keep you posted. Still can't get the one bolt out of the back deck frame that has the spring on. Also haven't been able to break loose # 2 and # 3 body bolts on both side. My son just brought back some spray that freezes the bolt. If I can sneak away tomorrow I will give it a try.
Have a Merry Christmas,
Nelson 007

I have read that you can get a socket on the cage nut but it will be a two person operation with a person on the outside and one on the inside. Guys also just cut the bolt off.
Feel free to ask any questions as I have been working on my 70 L46 Vert. for a while. No need to pull the body since it was pretty well preserved as a texas car.
Alan won't mentioned it but he is a vast wealth of knowledge with amazing pictures of his restoration process.

Looking forward to following your progress. I hope to do this to my 71 some day, but it will likely be many years from now!
Enjoy the process!

Hello Dan,
Its going to be a slow process. Yesterday, had a couple hours and tried to remove the rear deck brackets. Could not get the top outer bolt out of either side. Now sure what tool I will need to remove it, but I could not get any of my wrenches on the bolt.
Have a good day,

I have a 70 coupe vin last four of 1999 that was built in January 70 due to a strike in 69. I have a 70 electrical system but a 69 interior and vacuum system and rag joint. Leftover parts!
I'm not positive but it may have started life as an LT1. 71 BB in it now. 5600 red line on the tach, BB hood and no rear torsion bar.
you are going to have a lot of fun!
best of luck!

Hello GDE8270,
I also have a 68 427/435. I have a 1970 July Vett 350/350 that's all stock and was restored about 20 years ago. When I go to put this LT1 back together I will use that as a reference car. I was going to sell it, but after of looking what I took off this one I think I will need that car in order to assemble the LT1. It's better than a AIM manual.

Nelson,
Take pictures, a lot of pictures. I used them as reference when I put my interior back together. Each time I took pictures I used the date to save them so I could go back and reverse the sequence. Dash was a bugger for the vacuum lines and electrical.
Remember as a retiree, every day is Saturday!
best of luck,
Gary

This a good website that shows the step by step of a C-3 restoration. Sometimes the assembly manual just is not enough. I have no connection to the website, just came across it working on my 72

Hello CF6873,
I think I will have to go the Roman route. A friend bought a more powerful air rachet here yesterday. That one did not help either. While I was waiting for him to come and I thought I would remove the brackets that are spring loaded for the read deck. Could not get the top outer bolts on either side. When my friend got here he thought it would be best to leave them on. I can paint the edge of the read deck first and than install on the deck on the car when I paint to complete body.
Thanks Again,
Nelson 007
