Default Insulation Ahead of Trans Tunnel but Behind Foam Collar

This has me miffed. I installed the trans tunnel insulation from the vendors with the 4 piercing clips. Also installed the foam collar just behind the engine block. So far so good...

I am missing some insulation in the tunnel between the rear of the foam collar and the forward end of the tunnel insulation. This missing insulation would have to either be installed before body drop or sans engine/bellhousing.

This area of the tunnel that has no insulation has several (at least 6) factory type of piercing clips that aren't doing anything.
What am I missing here? This is killing me. I'm ready for a vacation. Thanks, Rick

edit: As far as I can tell, the AIM doesn't help me with this problem.

Hi 69,
I believe 69 cars had blanket insulation that other years (except maybe some 68s) didn't have.
I believe the amount and location changed as the year progressed. They were dealing with the hot interior issues.
I remember reading that people reported it varied from car to car and was roughly done.
Look at Zip M-3969.
I THINK that wraps up over the tunnel and even extends a couple of inches up the face of the firewall above the bell housing and behind the distributor.
????
Regards,
Alan

Hi Rick, Alan is right My car had a form of insulation that was attached to those pointy little clips located in the tunnel but before the foil. Mine was oil soaked and half gone . I will look for a pic. Mine extended to the white plastic heat shields.

Hi r,
I'd forgotten that you had mentioned the insulation and posted some pics!
I think the 'stringy part' is part of the tail on the L shaped piece at ZIP.

Alan

I think that part # from ZIP is correct Alan ,at least that was the one I was looking to get along with the new plastic shields.

A big thank you to both of you guys. I was really scratching my head over this one. It's one area where the AIM is vague. I really want to make sure that all of the insulation is in place so I can have a nice comfortable car. Wondering now if I should do something in addition to the factory type insulation in this are. Already plan to use something on the inside of the cabin to keep the heat down.

I had a day away from this project and feel a lot better about it now. First day away since the end of June including Sundays. I already want to get back at it but have two weeks of other work that I need to do. I really appreciate the help and guidance that has been offered to me here on the forum. No telling where I be without it. Thank You, Rick

The 68's (my late 1968) and 1969's had insulation blankets that covered the lower half of the engine side of the firewall and extended under the driver's and passenger's floor pans. The insulation also extended into the forward parts of the tranny tunnel. To protect the insulation under the floor pans, there were steel shields. All this can still be bought. I bought all the stuff to ultimately add to my 70. The steel shields are easy to add. Really terrible that GM dropped this really useful feature. What cheap Charlie's!

I was aware of the insulation running on the firewall and into the tunnel. I was not aware of any metal shielding though. Need to look into that. Do you have a pic of that on a car. Thanks

If you have the trans out of the way, why not insulate the underside of the trans tunnel with the ceramic insulation that is covered with dimpled aluminium on one side? Its only about 1/4" thick but very effective. The stuff is self adhesive and sticks really well. I used it in the trans tunnel and have not bothered to fit the collar as the centre console doesn't get hot in the car anymore.

The car's in the body shop. You can see the shields in the Paragon catalog. Let me know if you don't see them.

Ah okay, I found them in the paragon book. I guess you still use them even with side pipes application. Thanks for the heads up. Oh yeah something else to buy. Do they go before or over the seat belt riveted brackets, or maybe not that far back.

MIne still has the metal shields (and plastic ones too) I'd like to know more about the ceramic type that has adhesive on it.Sounds like a good idea to me.
