Interior Dash Screws
I recently purchased a set of dash screws to replace the screws I was removing during a recent project. I am slightly confused. I believe they are stating that the 6 black screws are for the face of both the dash pad and speedo / tach dash. Is this correct? The screws I removed were chrome with washers (which they are saying are the dash / door jam screws)? I have attached a picture of the set.

Hi 76,
What color are the dash pads?
In the earlier 68-72 cars the six screws (3 each side) for the dash pads were the color of the dash pad.
The chrome plated screws were used at the 2 locations on each hinge pillar.
I'd think your 76 would have used 6 interior colored screws too.
Regards,
Alan
If the screws for the dash pads had been installed with out the collet that comes with each screw the screw heads may have enlarged the holes in the pads so much that washers were needed.
What do the holes look like?

Hi Mike,
What often happens is a screw without the 'collet' is used and when it's tightened the underside of the screw's head grabs the vinyl and twists and tears it. The collet stops turning when it contacts the vinyl but the screw continues until it's tight… so no tear.
The plastic wall anchors aren't going to help in this case because the problem isn't with what the screws thread into…u-clip… but is rather with the pad surface itself.
Regards,
Alan
Here you can just see the bracket and clip on the underside of the upper dash pad.

My 73 has a black interior. It had the chrome screws with the washers attached. But it looked strange to me so I changed them out to the black ones. I dont know about the hole opening being elongated, but as Alan explained I can see how that happened.

The interior screw sets have such unique fasteners. For an interior, I will buy two or three sets of interior fasteners from different vendors just to ensure I'll have the correct fastener. To make the interior look really correct, you need the correct fasteners. Notwithstanding buying these new fasteners sets from different manufacturers, I also have went to salvage yards to get the really correct fastener.

Do you know of anyone who supplies the upper dash screws with the collets you have pictured? Those are unusual, and would give a better fit as the upper dash pad holes are deep.

Hi B,
Doc Rebuild lists the screws with 'eyelets' (collets).
Whether he still has them I don't know. 1466555

I could not find the collets anywhere. Maybe someone else found them.
I was in home depot one day in the electrical isle and was looking at crimp on connectors for some wiring and found these things... thought man those look close to the collets??
Used a wide punch and the anvil on my vise to open up the flare and then cut them to size. Worked great and supports the dash pad as its supposed to without twisting or crushing the vinyl.
They were only a couple of dollars and took a few mins to customize.

that certainly looks like a great solution, What are the three collets in the picture? Is that an original in the middle? When you say you cut them, did you cut off the bottom?

Alan,
The latest versions are not quite the same but are functional. The collets are free to swivel as intended.
