Default Can this undercarriage pipe be painted with RustSeal/Blacktop

Hi all. I have a 79 c3 vette and I want to paint the undercarriage to prevent further rust building and stuff. Does anyone know if I can paint the pipe seen in the picture (white arrows) with a product such as RustSeal/Blacktop?
If for any reason it cannot, how can it be covered to prevent further rusting, etc..?

Thank you
siol.

That's your exhaust. You don't want to paint that.

It's likely just old style carbon steel, so there's not a lot you can do with it. When the time comes to replace it, you can do so with aluminized or stainless steel pipe if you want to avoid the rusty look.

The above product likely would do a good job. But why would you want to put that kind of effort into extending the life of an old set of carbon steel exhaust pipes? You could likely replace your pipes with new aluminized ones for significantly less effort.

At least now you know you have a couple of options.

Hi Siol. There was previously another post between my first and second posts. Someone had recommended a product, and I believe they were the vendor of that product. They have since deleted their post.

Re: the exhaust pipes. I wouldn't worry about them until (i) you want to spend the money to replace them with aluminized ones (not too expensive really, check the online vendors like Willcox, Corvette Central, etc.), or (ii) they start to give you trouble (like leaks etc.). They may not be pretty, but they will probably function properly for a while yet.

Don't waste your money on paint! Just start saving so you can buy stainless pipes when those rust out. I put a stainless steel exhaust from "Allen's" on my '72 many years ago and it still looks like new. Definitely worth the money. The whole set of pipes (without mufflers) cost me $225.00. I guess that tells you how long ago I did the replacement.

If you have the money buy the stainless system . It's a no-brainer . I thought you was looking for a cheap option to buy some more time.

Aluminized or SS systems are just fine. But if he wishes to treat what looks likes a pretty solid carbon steel set of pipes use black BBQ spray paint. Not expensive and it works very well. Put it on when the pipes are cold and then warm up and let it set. It is meant for such heat. A $10.00 solution.

That pipe is pretty badly rusted. But, if it is solid, you can paint it with VHT high temp paint. Their 'flat aluminum' paint is a good choice for exhaust pipes. You might want to wire brush any loose rust from the pipe surface, first.
