Should I pay the mechanic?
Good evening,
I recently swapped motors in my 1981 corvette. I installed the motor myself and hooked up most of the motor. I ran into a family emergency but I wanted the car to be done by the time I got back. The shop mechanic told me they get it done in a couple of days. It has been 11 days (6.5 working days) since I dropped off the vette to get worked on and they are still not finished. I contacted the shop on Tuesday and they told me that the mechanic working on my car was on lunch. I called back on Thursday and there was no answer. I contacted them through Facebook yesterday afternoon asking for an update. They saw the message 2 hours later and did not respond. Today they did not contact me at all.
Is it worth the battle to not pay the mechanic or pay little as possible for not doing their job in a timely manner? I was told it would take a couple of days (give or take a day or so).
Here is a list of things that needed to be done to the car.
Radiator fan installed.
Radiator fan switch and relay kit installed.
Transmission vacuum line connected to intake
Flexible Transmission dipstick tube installed
Alternator wiring replaced.
Power steering pump installed
Belts installed.
New distributor installed.
Engine timed.
Flywheel Dust cover installed.
Fluids added.
Thanks for the feedback!

I didnt know you took the car in from your other thread on this subject,
Well now you see why i believe that 99% of shops suck out loud and corvette shops are the worse?
However,
If you refuse to pay they can refuse to give you your car back,
Most techs are ego driven he said a few days but it wasnt likely, if tgey are being real cheesedicks tell them you will pay them for work done ( you pretty much have to ) and are getting your car,
If they are tyring to be cool dont you be the dbag, asked why its taking longer etc...see if it can be worked out friendly,
I been there done that, job promised in a week, 9 months later and counting car still not done i asked for it back, he said he didnt feel like moving other cars to get mine out, i said okay, i will be there with the sheriff and osha, and only then did he feel like getting my car out, my car was damaged, but i got it back.

Pick your car up and pay the bill.

there is no reason not to answer your calls. Time to go there in person with a flat bed. take the car home and do the work. see what they did come up with a price based on that and the time line they missed.

Hi t,
Perhaps FACEBOOK isn't the right means to interact with someone with whom you're having, or will likely soon have, a dispute.

You want to get involved in a legal dispute by stiffing a mechanic on a bill because its been 11 days?
Pick up your car, pay your bill and never, ever consider having any shop or mechanic work on your old car again. Only perform your own work on your cars.

Yes, pay the price and get your car back a smarter person. I don't worry much about time when I put the car in the shop as much as the quality of the work. But I do not need to drive mine to get around in.

If they did any work you are liable for what you and them agree to. If the charges are more than you feel are right try to work with them for a compromise. Trying to get the car without paying will only get you in legal trouble or a mechanics lien.

I would give them the benefit of the doubt. You don't know what they may have run in to on your car or otherwise. I agree they should be communicating, but working on old cars for someone else can be a bear sometimes. I'd go see them or send someone over to talk to them if you can't be there.
PS... if the work they have already done is good work, please don't ask them to work for peanuts just because they didn't do it as quickly as you needed.

those who suggest stiffing the mechanic have you heard of Mechanic's Lien ?
you stiff them, they already have your name, address, and plate number.
sheriff will come knocking and take your car.
Pay the bill learn the lesson, never take a classic car into a general shop.
