Default How do I clean up my firewall?

My engine is coming out of the car and I thought it would be a good time to clean up the firewall. How do I do it? Remove all wiring/hoses, brush clean and re-paint? What color should it be painted? Thanks for any replies.

Any other things I should consider doing with the engine out? Suspension and steering box have been rebuilt already.

I used some simple green and a nylon brush, then pressure washed mine off.

Then I used krylon semi-flat black paint. Turned out great.

Another forum member (gkull) got amazing results by using that "no touch" tire cleaner spray.

He did his whole engine compartment. And it really did look fabulous.

I'm with Rhys. Simple Green works really well.

I used a brillo pad - I really wanted a good finish and was able to take the dirt and overspray off from the previous owner - it came out great - I used a little low gloss black in some areas where blending was needed. It came out great.

I used elbow grease........and lots of it. Sandpaper was a big help too. The paint finish was accomplished using engine enamel (highly recommened)and cutting it back with 1200 wet and dry. Then compounding it for a top shine.
I won't post the pic of it here cause it's a little large but here's the link for it. http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/brutus/index6.shtml

I use simple green, then tape things off or wrap in foil. Then some semi gloss black to paint.
