Default 454 For Sale that I would appreciate some feedback on

What do you guys think. You guys gave me some great feedback on a 383 a couple weeks ago. I found this on CL and it seems like a good buy to me. Trying to find a donor motor for my Chevelle, it's 307 doesn't read to high on the fun meter.

Questions
Is this a good value?
Any watchouts on the description?
Any questions I should ask for more clarity?

I appreciate the help and feedback from the smart folks! Years ago my friend bought a 402 of someone and it crapped out after about 500 miles. Trying to avoid that........

Enough of my blathering, heres the ad

Sounds like a deal, even if you had to pay for a dis-assembly, inspection, and re-assembly. Nice find!!

I have a spare stock 454 that I wouldn't part with unless serious money was offered for it. What you found sounds like a heck of a deal. Thers's no way you can buy an engine and parts and get the machine shop work done for that kind of money. I can't tell you how many 307 me and my buddies junked when we were younger. Just not enough HP in them.

Seems like a pretty decent deal... Id say that is probably about a 400-425 hp motor, pretty nice combo of parts.. As long as its built right, its worth $3k...

BTW 445 casting blocks are 4 bolt mains.

The only thing that would slightly worry me is that it's already 060 over. It might have another bore in it, but it may not. I'd feel better about it if it was 030 or 040 as that means at least one more bore.

But I still think it's worth the asking price unless the machine shop messed it up completely.

Thanks guys, it seemed like a good deal. I'm a novice and want to make sure I'm buying something I can use. I want to make sure I'm not getting into something that is race only, or built with a combination that doesn't make sense.

Thanks again :o)

Not sure what year the block is. Back in the mid 70's, I would bore my 454 blocks out .125 for stock car racing. Those engines would last for a long time with many laps of racing on a big 3/8 mile dirt track.
My engines had 4 bolt mains with 7/16 rods, aluminum heads, 12.5 to 1 compression pistons, etc.

As long as the seller can document the build with receipts, go for it.

Even if one or two cylinders were bad they could be sleeved- aluminum blocks are all sleeved.

Hi Rich,
I believe the casting number and date indicate it's a later block that was intended for use in a light duty truck.
14015445….454….2 or 4 bolt….1978- 1990 (years used)….Truck LD.
April 22, 78 or 88. If the pad is stamped the broadcast code might help indicate which of those years it was cast.
Regards,
Alan

what changes will you have to make for BB on Chevelle? Mounts, crossmember, brakes, springs, tranny?
