Default charcoal canister

Can you remove the charcoal canister on an 81? if you can, what do you do with the line that goes to the gas tank?

Sure, you can remove the canister, I guess, but why would you want to?

Scott. if he removes it (plugs the line I assume) will he need a vented gas cap?

Well, smog pump and all that stuff is removed. Wanting to clean up area a little. is it even working with the pump removed. Wonder if I could remove all the hoses except the one going to the tank and just leave the canister there!!!!!!!!!

Well, yeah, you can remove it and install a vented fuel tank cap, but then your fuel tank is just vented to the atmosphere. Not good, unless you like the smell of gasoline. The canister is there for a reason.

There are a lot of extraneous hoses once you get rid of the smog crap, aren't there. All you really need for the canister to do its job is to connect it to the fuel tank using the hose that is available, and then another hose connected to a manifold vacuum source. When the car sits, gas fumes are collected in the canister, when you start the car they get burned off, and your garage doesn't stink like gas.

On my 81 the PO removed the canister and my garage stunk!
I spent the 50 bucks and put a new one on....problem solved
Only this is I think I do have a vented gas cap...can you post a pic if your. 81 gas cap ?

If I were you I would keep it on and avoid the headache and fumes

The A.I.R. pump and the charcoal [fuel vapor] canister have nothing to do with each other...except that they deal with emission control.

There is no downside to retaining the vapor canister...unless you know that it is not functional, or strictly for weight reduction.

If you remove it and plug the line to the tank, you will need to replace your non-vented gas cap with a vented one. (the vapor canister IS the fuel tank vent for the stock system)

Can u post a pic of your gas cap? As mentioned I choose to put a new charcoal canister in my 81 to avoid gas fumes and allow the gas tank to vent properly but I'm not sure what a stock 81 gas cap looks like...I don't want to be venting in two places lol

Don't need the canister at all. Total waste of time and money.

Unless you replace the activated charcoal, or get a new one, your 30 plus year old canister is played out anyway.

And, unless you have a leak, you won't smell gas.

You will need a vented gas cap. That's all.

Why do you think every Small Block Chevy in the world doesn't have the charcoal canister? Why don't all the cars without them smell like gas? It is another ill thought out smog device.

Another totally useless system is the extra vent in the fuel pump for "vapor lock". Waste of time and money.
