Accelerator cable to gas pedal.
This happened to me 12 years ago and I can't remember how I fixed it at the time. Too bad for me: It happened again this week.
The accelerator cable got loose from the gas pedal and guess what, the thing is not easily accessible. Last time was late at night. No light, no luck. This time I had plenty of light, but the shoulder of the highway is definitely not the best place to work on the car.
Still, I managed to fix it temporarily using a small wood stick I found on the ground, and I made it back home. Once in my garage, I made a better fix that should last longer than the wood stick. But still, I'd like to understand how it is supposed to be done Not much litterature on the subject.

Hi A,
I'm not sure what year car you're asking about?
If it's the one in your avatar there are 4 parts at that connection.
The 'lever' that's part of the gas pedal assembly.
The accelerator 'cable'.
A 'slug' that's crimped on to the end of that accelerator cable.
A plastic cable 'retainer' that fits in the drilled hole at the end of the
'lever'.
The 'slug' is small enough to pass through hole in the 'lever'. The 'retainer' is slit so it can be slipped on the cable forward of the 'slug' after it's been inserted through the 'lever'. The 'retainer' is then seated in the hole of the 'lever', and the 'slug' is seated in the 'retainer'. The 'retainer' then prevents the 'slug' from being pulled through the 'lever's hole when the accelerator is pushed down.
It sounds like your 'retainer' might not be doing it's job or is even missing.
Take a look at Paragon Reproductions #2520 (Detail).
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Yes, it is the one on the avatar: 1971 LS5
The retainer is missing, indeed. Don't know where it went.
Thank you for the tip. Eckler's, Corvette America and ZIP don't carry it I believe.
Thank you for all this information. I really appreciate it.

Hi A,
Sometimes if the accelerator cable is disconnected at the carburetor there's just enough slack in the cable for the retainer to 'back out' of the lever, AND, if it's turned just right it can fall off the cable.
Maybe?

Alan

I had the same thing happen yrs ago.To get home I pulled the cable back into engine compartment, left the hood popped and worked the cable w/my arm out the window!!It is a super tight fit to rehook to pedal for sure.I replaced it w/a Lokar cable

When it happened to me the first time, it was night time, real dark. I had no flash light. I couldn't see what end of the cable was diconnected. I was about 3 - 4 miles away from home. I made it back home at idle in 4th gear!!!! Torque is good.
