Fitting new J Shape Wiring/Vacuum Harness Retainers
1970 454 C3
Just put a new vac and wiring harness under the hood and the J shaped retainers that support it look at little tired now, and I want to replace them.
Whats the process, drill them out, grind the rivets that fix them to the side of the engine compartment? Any tips from someone who has done this would be welcome.
Also what did you use to refix the new ones?
Kind regards
Paul

If they are pop rivets like my 81, just drill the head off one side, and pop rivet them on.

Hi Paul,
The various clips that support the wiring harness and vacuum hoses are available from many of the vendors.
There are 4 or 5 different sizes and configurations.
Some with a black plastic dipped coating and some plain.
During 68-72 most of these clips were attached to the firewall and aprons using the soft flat aluminum rivets.
These rivets need to be drilled out to remove the clip and the new clip can be reinstalled using the same type of rivet or a pop rivet using a small washer on the 'back-side' of the rivet. (A pop rivet set in the fiberglass often just pulls right out if you don't use the washer.)
Regards,
Alan

Hi Paul,
The rivets used in most locations are the typical soft aluminum large flat head type in the 3/16" diameter.
The length needed varies depending on the location it's to be installed. (You might consider buying all of the rivets in the longer length and cutting them to length as is needed.)
You need to have a method to set the rivets (by hand or pneumatically) and some locations take 2 people to do it.
The typical pop rivets are easier to use so it depends on what you want the finished appearance to be as to which you choose.
Regards,
Alan

My advice on such clips:
If the clips are significantly damaged, they need to be replaced. If they are NOT significantly damaged, and they are still retained well, spend a bit of time 're-shaping', cleaning/refurbishing the original parts in their present position and just reuse them.
