1987 Coupe Code 24 & Code 44
First of all, I want to thank the other people that use this site, keep it going, and add useful information! I have the OEM Service Shop manual and a Haynes manual for my C4's, and the only way I was able to solve my Code 34 problem was from this forum. My car actually had a problem with the air flow sensor relay, but never triggered a code 36. I never would have known to check both relays if it weren't for this forum.
Now for my question. I recently bought an '87 coupe that had been sitting for 5 years. After resolving the rough idle and Code 34, I now have a code 24 and 44. Are there any suggestions for diagnosing the code 24? This weekend I plan to check and make sure the wiring is properly connected to the speed sensor. I obviously don't have a working speedo or odometer, but everything else works properly on my gauges. Also, are there any suggestions for resolving Code 44. I put in new spark plugs and an oxygen sensor. After I clear the computer, there is an inconsistent amount of time that the code 44 sets. Sometimes it is in 60 seconds. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes. I bought the car with a fuel tank full of water (not sure how it got there), but I siphoned out the water/fuel, pumped out the remainder with the in-tank fuel pump and put fresh fuel in it. Yesterday I drove the car about 150 miles with fuel injector cleaner in it. It seemed to help, but I still set a code 44 inconsistently. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

24 is VSS, but it can be related to the TPS setting. Check that out, and particularly the TPS per the manuals instructions.
If it is the TPS, then that is the likely cause of the 44, you fix the codes from the front of the engine backwards. It doesnt necessarily mean the O2 sensor is bad, these things can trigger each other.

Thanks guys for your help! I have discovered that my Vehicle Speed Sensor connector is brittle and broken. I have also discovered that the sensor is not working properly. Tonight I pick up new connectors at NAPA along with the special tools for removing the wiring from the connector. Then I go to another store to pick up a new Vehicle Speed Sensor. I hope to at least have that problem resolved before I try running more clean fuel through the system and checking the TPS. Thanks again!
