Default Memcal Question

I'm getting ready to swap the ECM in my 85 to a 165 ECM. I'll be using a flash chip with a Moates G1 adapter. I was going to buy a refurbished ECM but I'm pretty sure it would not have a memcal. Do I need a stock memcal to make this work?

I dont think you need the memcal. It has the limp home chip but you dont really need that. I have the memcal plugged in to my G1 but its pretty useless.

Be sure to get a V8 memcal, or you will get a cylinder select error.

Any 86 thru 89 F, or Y body memcal will work. I buy them on E-Bay for between $50 and $100. They've been discontinued for sometime now, so buying them used is about all that's left. Shoot me a PM if you want and
I can hook you up with one with a flash chip in it.

I would love to go aftermarket but the state of California frowns on it. The point of this ECM swap is to improve my emissions at idle. The 85 ECM just doesn't have the programming parameters available that the 165 ECM has.

So I guess you are saying I have to have a memcal? I thought the G1 adapter bypasses the memcal.

It only bypasses the 28 pin chip. You still need the two 12 & 16 pin chips. The G1 bypasses the 28 only, and requires the memcal to be complete.
