Oil Pressure - UPF44 vs. PF44
I just changed the oil and installed an AC/Delco UPF44 filter in place of the original PF44. I have noticed the oil pressure readings on the DIC to be 10 - 20 PSI higher, both at idle and at speed. Is this to be expected? Is this an indication of better filtration, or a function of fresh oil?
Thanks
Mike

Re: Oil Pressure - UPF44 vs. PF44 (hmert)
I am running the UPF-44 (since my 1st oil change) and with my second LOF I combined 10W-30 Mobil-1 oil with a new UPF-44. My oil pressure is 40psi just after an initial (cold) startup. I don't remember what the pressure was with the PF-44 filter, but the finer filtration will increase backpressure a bit. Corvette engineers say this pressure change is ok.

hmert, was that yourv 1st oil change? Mine did the same thing (increased 10-20 psi) after my first change whcih is when I put the UPF44 on. Many others have noticed the same increase in oil pressure after the 1st change, but no one has related it directly to changing filter types.

I too had an increase in oil psi with my first oil change also. I stayed with the PF44 oil filter so I don't believe the filter caused the increase.

If anything, the UPF filter should reduce the pressure. It is finer filtration, but according to GM has a lower pressure drop across the media to prevent the bypass from opening.

This might help explain your situation on the higer oil pressure after the first oil change:
During the break in period, it may be that there is some fuel washing down the cylinder walls and winding up in the crankcase, thus thinning the oil and resulting in lower pressure. This would be especially true if your driving habits included lots of cold starts (enriched mixture) and short trips (not heating oil sufficiently on short trip to evaporate the gasoline).
Good luck.

Have used the UPF-44 since the first oil change. There was a slight increase in pressure after the first change. Typically the pressure runs at about 43-44 on start up and at about 38-40 after the engine reaches operating temperature

Thanks for the response. Yes, this was my first oil change. I have about 2300 miles on the vehicle.
