Default What would make AH engange?

I know the Active Handling system is complex with lots of inputs such as wheel spin and accelerometer input, but here's my issue.

I noticed a while ago on the highway while on cruise control, that Active Handling would activate and take the car out of cruise. This happened several times during that trip. Nothing for a weeks after that, but no I'm noticing it happening every once in a while, just while driving, or hitting a bump, or braking (light). Certainly doing nothing that I would expect it to engage.

There are no codes thrown. I did have the EBCM fixed two years ago while under warranty.

I think a sensor is going, but can anyone point me in the direction as to which sensors to look at?

I would suggest the steering position sensor. Mine did the same thing, and took about a week to finally throw a code.

Is the steering wheel dead nuts centered when your going straight down the road?? Check the DTCs IMMIDIATELY when the issues happens. DO NOT turn the ignition off... Just enter the DTC routene and see what comes up.

Yep, checked codes as soon as the issue happens, while still driving. There are none.

To be clear, the AH only goes off for a few seconds, so it's impossible to be able to enter the routine while the event is happening. But after the event, by 30 seconds most, there are no codes and no history.

Steering wheel seems to be strait, I haven't noticed it out of alignment. It almost acts like it's losing traction for a moment, then goes away.

Thanks very much for your reply BC. Your knowledge and help in the tech section are one of the things that make CF great.

2002 Coupe. Car has the normal performance upgrades such as CAI, ARH headers, 3.42 gears and SS3200 stall with custom tuning. Wheels are also C6 Z06 Repos (so slightly heavier) with 9.5" front and 10" rear (wider Nitto Invos). C6Z51 bars (poly bushings) on lowered (stock bolts) ride. So the ride is also stiffer.

I don't know the AH system that well. My guess right now is a sensor of which there are a few (yaw, TCS, steering position). Are there any other sensors?

Second question. Can any mechanical issues cause this as well. Such as bad bearings, tie rods, etc?

Need the car perfect since my ECS Paxton kit is coming Monday!

My car was doing this too. It turned out to be the knock sensor sensing a knock. I know this is a bit of an oddity, but it is another reason the cruise control can drop out!

Interesting, and this, most likely, won't set a code....

The main items that will activate the active handling is the steering sensor, yaw sensor and wheel speed sensors. You mentioned upgrades...are your tire sizes still OEM sizes? Did this start happening following a mod?

Same symptoms on my 03 Coupe. Turned out to be the SWPS. Shutting off the Cruise is what happens in the begining. Eventually, it will start applying brakes and you'll feel the car jerk too. This can be verified with a Tech II or an ohmeter.

Had the same problem last Summer. Mine never set codes till the brakes started being applied. Pulled the codes and started repairs.

Had an alignment done, EBCM repaired and when it comes out of storage the SWPS will be replaced. Little by little I eliminated codes with each repair. SWPS is all that is left and the last code.

I'll look into the SWPS.

How hard is this to replace?

There are a few "how to" links on this forum. I had the dealer do it. Part:$80 Labor: ~$240.

02 Vert here, Kicking C1287/1288 - Service Vehicle Soon/Service Active Handling - If cruise was engaged would kick off cruise when it failed, also would fail randomly even if cruise was not engaged, going straight, steering wheel straight, etc........ and you could feel it slightly apply braking. Replaced SWPS - Part was $80 and cost me $280 total to have replaced - All good now - I think a dealership will charge you a bit more - It is something you could do yourself but I was wormy about screwing something up and setting off the air bag
