Default How to install C6 zo6 shocks in a c5 with ride control

I have a 99 c5 with i think the f45 suspension the one with the dial in the middle. My shocks are worn out and i would like to replace them with the C6 z06 shocks but i have read that its not possible to do while others say it is but no one goes into depth on how to do it. How would i go about installing the shocks in my C5

You can buy shock simulators or just add resistors. Or, you can use a Tech 2 to delete the F45 RPO from the car. I can post the info when I get home.

Mr. Sam

Thanks I found the tech 2 article but have not found the resistor how to. I really don't want to buy a $200 set of sims

There are SEVERAL methods that you can use to make everything copasetic. The RTD Computer and the BCM will NOT be happy if you don't make it think the RTD Shocks are still in the car.

The easiest method is to get rid of the F-45 RPO Code in the BCM.

You can also do one of the following:

Add wire wound resistors into the connectors that plug into the shock to make the RTD Computer think that the shocks are still in place.

Install Shock Simulators (Just expensive resistors)

Remove the OEM Coil from the shock and plug it into the connector and ZIP TIE that coil onto the frame.

If you don't do one of the above elimination procedures, you will get messages and the cars speed will be limited to 88 MPH.

Some more information: Your car has the BASE FE-1 suspension.

If you want a much better handling C5, I STRONGLY recommend:

1. Install a set of C5 Z-51 or ZO6 Sway bars and metal sway bar end links.

2. Install a set of Z-51 or ZO6 springs.

There are PLENTY of good used Z-51 & ZO6 suspension components available for a reasonable price..

You can also get some C6 Z-51 NEW stuff from Gene Culley.

Resistors can be soldered to the cars F45 wiring harness and then insulated to keep water and dirt out.

You can have someone with a Tech II device delete the F45 RPO.

You can also cut the electrical end out of your existing F45 shocks and then tie wrap then to the car.

Pick your choice from above and then install the conventional shocks of your choice without the 80MPH speed limitation of just installing conventional shocks and somehow NOT fooling the computer....
Is there any write up on how to remove the electronics from the old shocks properly.

I just went through this with my 1998 C5 and it doesn't always work out like you plan. I first tried to just hang the sensors as some had said worked and it didn't. I then bought resistors and put them in line and it didn't work either. Mine was throwing the codes and not letting me go over 80mph. The only thing that worked was going to my local dealer and paying him 50.00 bucks to use his Tech 2 to take it out of the system. So it my save time and money in the long run to spend 15 mins and a little money to just do it the right way. Other than that its just bolt up the shocks and go:-)
