Don't know how to say what is BEST but this is what I switched to and am very pleased with the results.
For the transmission:
Royal Purple Max-ATF
http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/matfa.html
When I changed the fluid 3 or 4 months ago, there was a noticeable change in how smooth the transmission felt and shifted.

For the differential
Royal Purple Max-Gear

I up-graded to Mobil-1 Synthetic ATF. It works very well and is reasonablely priced!

The trans shifts smoother!

It also helped my 98 MN6 Coupe!

GOOD STUFF!

Royal Purple, you can surly see the difference in how much smoother it shifts, especially when you speed shift. Seems like a lot of the autocross guy's have been using RP

I'm running Royal Purple Synchromax in the trans and Amsoil 75w90 in the rear.

After much consideration, I went with the following for my MN6 C5:

Trans: Red Line D4 ATF
Diff: Red Line 75W90 w/friction modifier

I use Redline MTL. It's great stuff. I tried the Redline D4, but was not satisfied with the results. With the MTL I can slip the tranny into reverse on the first try. I've used the MTL before on other cars with much success.

For anyone with older M6 trannies reading this, the M12 can run tranny fluids that aren't safe for some M6's. The M12 can take any good fluid. My preferences based on reviews here:

Amsoil or Redline
Mobil 1
GM Synchromesh
Royal Purple

I prefer to put amsoil in them. This is why I am a dealer.

Changed both 2 weeks after I got the car in 2000. Have changed once more since. But didn't need any additional friction modifier either time. I believe Redline comes with 4% FM as standard.

This must be a trick question, the Z06 doesn't use transmission fluid, it's a six speed and takes lube in the tranny.

But it still take ATF automatic transmission fluid. Not gear oil.

I'm running Royal Purple Synchromax in the trans and Royal Purple Max-Gear in the rear. I made the switch not too long ago, so far, so good. Transmission shifts pretty easy even in this 15 degree weather.

Wow!! I didn't know that. Seems like ATF would be way too thin for a gearbox. Learn something every day. Thanks for the info.
