Anyone remove the cat converters and replace them with straight pipe, keeping stock mufflers. I am looking to get more sound w/out spending a grand

I just bought the Kooks off road x-pipe which gets rid of the converters. I have yet to install them but will let you know how it sounds when I get it installed.

And I don't give a crap about the smog. I'm not a tree hugger.

What if you don't have headers and just want more sound, would removing the cats w/ stock mufflers accomplish this?
