Poly primer
I have a 1971 and assume some of the panels are SMC and have been told that I can't gelcoat it. i have some exposed glass fibers from being outside (about a 2 foot square spot). what brand and part number of polyester primer should I use on this and the entire car?

Can you describe the color of your body panel(s) that need help.
"Assuming" that they are SMC (so-to-speak) and KNOWING what they are are two
different things.
A photo of this area where fibers are showing up would be a help also.
Also...not knowing where you 'basically' live ( no Public Profile)...whether it is here in the United States or over seas....it is hard to tell you what to use only to find out you can not get it where you live.
You are also aware that if you use a polyester primer you will need to obtain a special gun with a large enough fluid tip and nozzle to apply it.

I live in So cal and have a friend with a house in Arizona so I can buy good paint and supplies. I don't have a problem with buying different spray guns. here is a picture of the back side of the panel. the black dots are undercoating overspray.

Are these exposed fibers on the exterior that you want to prime?????....or....
Are you planning on priming the area that you posted a photo of???

this is the back side of the rear quarter, I posted this to get help on what mater it is and what products I can use on it. the exterior patch looks about the same, I couldn't get a picture of it because it is on my lift and I have to move the frame out in the driveway to lower the body.
Thanks for the help

No need.
You can use a polyester primer. BUT...***DISCLAIMER**** I am not there to see how bad the fibers/panel are 'decomposed'...'so-to-speak'. Applying a primer on a surface that has lost integrity due to resins and fibers are gone and weaken due to enviornmental issues. Prepping the area would be wise to see how easily the panel sands.....and when good solid panel is reached. THEN...determining what is needed to replace the missing material would then have to be determined....due to how far down the sanding went to get to solid panel.

YES..'so-to-speak'. It is called 'genite'. Your car can actually be a mix of black polyester panels and the light gray SMC (genite)panels.
Google 'genite fiberglass panels' and read about it due to it is being discussed on another forum....so I do not have to type out what you may wan to know.
