C8 Corvette Convertible Reviewed: Zora's Dream Made Manifest as an American Ferrari (Official CorvetteForum Review!)

The 2020 Corvette is an AMAZING sports car, but if you plan to up its power levels, you’ll need a C8 Corvette transmission kit first.

Sure, the 2020+ C8 Corvette is one of the best American sports cars of all time straight out of the box. (Full Convertible review HERE!) But there are also a ton of people out there more-than-willing to jettison a warranty while chasing performance. If you are one of these folks (or a YouTuber), McLeod may have the perfect mod for your C8’s dual-clutch transmission.

As with many first-year sports cars, there is often a delay between a vehicle launch and the ability to modify it. In the C8 Corvette’s case, shops and aftermarket parts manufacturers are still struggling to overcome two limitations. The first is the LT2’s ECU itself. As I’m writing this, tuners have yet to crack it, leaving many folks with twin-turbos to play tricks on the engine while retaining the LT2’s factory tune.

The second limiting factor is the C8 Corvette’s eight-speed Wet Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT). Or more specifically, the factory clutch packs can’t handle much more than OEM power. The TREMEC TR-9080, “is the first TREMEC design to incorporate the transmission, differential, and axle drive into a single package. It’s able to perform shifts in less than one thousand milliseconds. Both clutches within the TR-9080 transmission have the ability to function as launch clutches and dynamic shifting clutches which allows a driver to have uninterrupted torque and power through clutch-to-clutch shifting.”

McLeod C8 Frictions & Steels

Enter McLeod Racing new TR-9080 frictions and steels kit, which you can order today and should be available in January.

According to McLeod, their kit’s high-performance frictions and steels “provide excellent heat dissipation under heavy loads. Handling up to 1000 HP, the kit improves shift performance and provides a flawless fit with no binding. Equipped with OE steel thickness for maximum heat sink and it is made in the USA.

In other words, if you’re planning to modify your C8 even a little, it’s a pretty good idea to also install one of these new McLeod frictions and steels kits. Now if only someone will crack the LT2 so the world can see the full potential of all these YouTubers and high-performance shops with twin turbski setups.
