‘Death Race 2000’ C3 Set for Mecum Auction

I’ve come across some pretty strange Corvettes over the years, and I can say with conviction that they don’t get much wilder than this one. This 1975 custom C3, set for Mecum’s upcoming auction May 9 through 11, is a true testament to why people say the most bizarre things come out of Hollywood.

Featured in the 1975 movie Death Race 2000, the ‘Vette’s assortment of parts is as strange as the car’s looks, if not stranger, as highlighted in an Autoevolution report.

The C3 features a Volkswagen chassis, Corvair air-cooled, dual carburetor engine with a 3-speed manual transmission. And that menacing supercharged V8 that sits in the back is fake. The real motor lies under the front ridges of this green beast, as it would in an actual Corvette, you know, one without teeth.

That Corvette-turned-gator styled body rides on custom wheels and BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires, which, when it comes to this car, is really one of the only things that seems to make sense in the real world.

Inside, the one-of-a-kind Corvette features a Green diamond-pleated interior and wrapped steering wheel that looks like something designed by Liberace.
