Ok, I'm going to finally replace the former owner's crappy X-Plod head unit (the one where someone sat on the detachable face and cracked the LCD so you can't see what station you are listening to) in my 89 C4 convertible with a nice new stereo. So far I've been able to answer all my questions by lurking and FAQ-surfing here.
Now my question has to do with the installation kit. The one I have now sticks out from the dash, which just looks bad as far as I'm concerned.
Where should I look for a new install kit? Is this something that I can find locally (Best Buy/Circuit City) or do I need to buy online? If you have used one that works/looks good and doesn't make the stereo stick out from the dash, what was the make and model?
FWIW, i'm getting a Kenwood EZ500 (all black with real *****!) and I (obviously) didn't get it from Crutchfield or anyplace else that gives you a free install kit (I got it from less than 1/2 of Crutchfield's price).
I bought my Metra kit at Best Buy. It came with a flush mount and 2 extended ones. To use the flush one all you need to do is remove the top of the plastic frame where the back of the stock unit butted up to. When you remove the old one you will see what i'm talking about.
Here is a pic of mine with the flush mount.
