I'm looking to add an Ipod ,or creative labs mp3. I plan to take a long trip this summer, and need more tunes. I can buy the creative lab 20 gig thru Comcast for $190. Are these units any good, or can you only download from certain sites, thnaks Jim.
I have a Nomad Zen NX and it is great. Better than the Ipod IMO. HOWEVER, if you are looking to integrate an MP3 player into a car stereo, for the best sound quality and controls from the head unit, I would buy an Ipod and use it with a new Alpine deck. They are designed to integrate together. This is what I am doing with my system.
ipods w/correct interface can be controlled through a stock system (just the basics though: track forward, rev, play, pause etc) My roommate had an ipod and a nomad and the nomad was a little clunkier but had more features. i love my ipod and wouldnt trade it for a nomad
check out the pac-audio website.
a word of caution, dont store it in the center console arm rest thing. i put mine there and it fried my ipod (to hot) they replaced it under warranty and the cust. service was amazing.
Nearly every manufature is making an Ipod ready radio or adaptors to connect the Ipod to the radio. I have a Perpherial Electronics piece in my 04 Silverado and a Pioneer direct connect in my Vette. I will also add a connection to my wife's new 05 BMW M3...just goes to show that Ipod interface is endless.
I just got an Ipod photo this past week...it is wonderful!
There are several ways to hard wire it to your car stereo, and also a not so good way to use the FM stations to receive the signal, i think its called Itrip from Griffin.
The Ipod works absolutely flawlessly...I got the 30gb size and is just right for me.
I have about 2500 pictures on theor so far and about 5000 songs...with plenty of room to spare, I think Im only at abot 20% capacity right now.

$190 is a great value considering there's a 90% chance you're going to STEAL $6000 worth of hit tunes off the internet anyway.
Why can the YOOTS of today afford all these new gadgets?
Because they don't pay for the media to download into them.
I would suggest you go down to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and play around with both and then make a decision.
I'm sold on the Apple iPod for a variety of reasons: simplicity (very low learning curve in my opinion), iTunes, solid look/feel, and a growing support base for integration into factory/aftermarket stereo systems.
When you couple the iPod with something like this: mp3yourcar , you end up with a fantastic setup!!! I was not able to find any solution similar to this for the Creative Nomad or any other vendor...
Evil , I think I read where the Ipod could be hooked into the rear cd changer. I'm on the fence on what unit to buy right now, thanks Jim.
Yes there are several radio "adapters" on the market that will allow you to hook up the Ipod to any radio. If you go this route, you will only be allowed to use either a modulated frequency via the FM tuner or if you have an aftermarket head unit, the AUX input. The latter only allows you to control the Ipod via the Ipod and not the head unit.
For seamless control of the Ipod via the deck, the ONLY choice out there right now is the Alpine units with the Ipod interface (KCA-420i). These were designed to work together so you will not lose any sound quality and the controls are redundant between the deck and the Ipod.

Sorry but you are wrong. Several companies are making direct control radios/adaptors. The hottest thing going at both SEMA and CES this past year was Ipod intergration. These are just links to two other companies. The Peripheral pieces use either the XM input on the factory radio or the changer input. Either way it is direct plug and play, direct control, and no FM modulator.

Sweet. It was a matter of time before several companies developed interface units, although I still think there may be several limitations as far as control from the deck on the older Pioneer units and by using the peripheral product. I would still go with Alpine IMO. Thanks for providing that info!
Mike I would be careful with storing the Ipod in the center console. It gets WAAAAAY too hot in there from that trans tunnel. I would relocate the Ipod to the glove box.
