This came up in the C3 forum, and since Im no where near my professional installer guru, I thought I mkight ask you boys. Is it possible to put an aftermarket HUD into a C3? You would obviously have to have all electrical guages, but is it more complicated than that? Any help/insight into the HUD would be appreciated. Thanks.

You will not retrofit a factory GM system. That unit is integrated with rest of the car's computer system. I can only imagine how big a bitch it would be to retrofit.

god, it would take forever for you to do it if you didnt already have an electronic intergrated sensor output data aquisition harness already built into the car as the later corvettes did. You'd probably be better off buying a programmable logic controller and adding discrete data logging sensors on the exhaust, distributer, gauges, intake pressure, speedometer, etc... Then it might only take you a few weeks to tweak the software.
But if you are only interested in a few data points, like the speedometer and gauges, those other systems might do the trick. But trust me, writing your own data loggiing software SUCKS. Even if you have had prior programming hiearchy experience. May just be easier and cheaper to buy a C5
ahhhh but you forget that I go to university!! Most of my friends are of the engineering type, Im sure I can fangdangle them into writing me a program. If you cant have friends in high places, why have friends at all
hahaha so if its a nominal 12V then Im assuming this shizit will work, and yea it avaliable, kinda $$ but youre damn right its trick. So now that I know its possible, and plausible, whats stopping me from doing it? Thanks man.
I got a HUD off ebay.
tear out the display in it.
use the defi speedo to display the speed in the windsheild.
build my own tach out of an electrical set up I have that uses LED's for the tach band.
May try to fit in a few other gauges, like a boost gauge, which uses LED's.
I have all the stuff, just need the time.
Another concern of mine, I have no idea if there is room in the dash to mount the HUD display system.
All of this is really very quite expensive, I know for me to use the Dakota Digital guage package and link up with the DEFI CPU/HUD itll be around 1500 US
I dont know WHERE you got that info dude, I have all of this priced out from the reps at Defi and Dakota, it wont cost more than 1800 for EVERYTHING and thats after shipping!
x 2 - the electronic ignition and monitor systems start at 5k and go to 40k.

An 81 vette has mostly electronic elements... so there is no need to an engine management system.
But you are also describing something like a Pi or Delphi system... My neighbour just bought a Delphi system for his race car, and it was about $2200.00 or so, with ECM.
ohhhhhhh he was talking about crazy stuff like that, oh no you dont need ANY of that to do an all digital HUD system, at least not in a relatively low tech C3 anyhow :p. All you need are the sensors for oil pressure/temp, tach, water temp, A/F mixture, fairly easy things like that. The kit comes with a smallish sort of control unit to digitize the data and display it, its not really all that complex.

Not sure if this helps at all, but curiosity got the best of me and I went to the site www.neonautolights.com to look at the HUD. I found installation instructions for it on the site, you can take a look at them and maybe you can find your answer. Looks to me like it should be fairly easy to install as long as you can identify the correct wire to splice into.
