I want to keep my car looking stock even though I am changing everything.
I saw the speaker covers in the dash so I figured I could pop in a pair of dash speakers. Once I got the dash off I saw that the covers are decoys. Do I cut a hole in these covers without cutting the cloth to put my speakers in or can I buy dash speaker covers that I could put speakers under and have it look stock?
I'm lost and my car is very much apart.
Are you sure you really want dash speakers? A lot of guys don't bother with them because it can take a lot of work to get them sounding good (can you say imaging nightmare?).
Seems to me my dash had blanks that I could unscrew (I think the date on the mold imprint said 1983) in order to plop some speakers in. I am not 100% sure though as this was years ago.
I thought I wanted them.
I bought the speakers so I would like to try at this point.
I was hoping there was a pair of grills I could buy that I could mount the speakers into and they would fit into the dash.
I'm not going to start cutting the decoys I have because I want to be able to go back to stock or at least have that option.
If people who have tried dash speakers could let me know their experiences, I would like to hear about it.
Thanks
When I had my 84 I also thought about the dash speakers...so I pulled the decoys and used a razor knife to gently cut the blank out. I installed the correct size speakers (don't remember the exact size) and wired them up to an aftermarket head unit...my other speakers were amp powered...to be honest, they really didn't add much to the overall sound...but since the door speakers sit so low- it did provide some highs up top...they may have been better pushed by an amp...all in all, the install was pretty easy and looked stock afterward...just be careful cutting the blank out!
Good luck- oh, I have alos seen people use component speakers and put the tweater up there...thats a great idea...and usually can find those covers on ebay...
I just got off the phone with the local GM parts guy.
He told me that the car had a UQ4 option that came with dash speakers.
Unfortunately these covers are discontinued but if I can find them I won't need to do any cutting.
I checked ebay with no luck.
I was thinking about hooking both the dash and door speakers to the same amp.
careful about doing that. I have heard that the standard amp in the door cannot support both speakers for long. let us know how you make out though, I was just fiddling with this idea myself...

I should have been more clear.
I am going to mount an amp in the back of the car and run 4 speakers off it.
I have new door speakers as well.
Yeah I installed speakers in under the decoys on the dash in my 87 vert. I just bought speakers that fit the size of the outlining underneath and screwed them in 4 corners. I also drilled holes through the decoy as well without messing up the fabric so I could hear the speakers and it worked out rather well. I've have them in for 4 years now with no problems.

That's an option too.
I may see if I can find a second pair of the covers and play with them. That way I'll save my originals.

I have exactly what you are looking for. I have those very decoys already cut to fit 4x6 size speakers (that's the size it takes, I suggest using plate speakers). I am not using them anymore and if you want them I'll let you have them for real cheap. You won't have to cut your decoys, save them for when you want to go back stock.
PM me if you are interested in them. The part has been discontinued by GM and if you try to purchase them off Ebay you will pay a fortune and they won't be cut either.
