Remember how the McLaren F1 was designed with a lightweight stereo? My Corvette is a dual purpose car, so I still need stereo that doesn't kill me around corners. If you have any information to help me build a database of stereo component weights, please help me out. Anything from listed weights, to links of sources, to recommendations would be appreciated. FWIW, I'm building a stereo for a C5 coupe, but information for other generations would be interesting to see. Thanks!
Just about any aftermarket HU will be lighter than the Bose.
Look for neodymium magnet speakers, they are more expensive but are much, much lighter than a regular strontium magnet.
Class D amps for subwoofers are smaller and lighter, and cheaper too Use fiberglass instead of wood for enclosures.
Good Luck

anyone tried those new Blaupunkt super thin subs, neo mags and other crazy stuff goin on...something like 2.25" depth (top-mounted), 2 11/16" depth (bottom-mounted) on a 10" sub 10" size: 4-ohm, 90 dB sensiitivity, 200W RMS cont, 600W peak, 20-200Hz freq range. if i ever decide to go the sub/amp route these look very appealing so that i can save space.
Those subs look interesting. I have plenty of space behind my drivers seat (race bucket), hmm.... Maybe I could call it a safety feature since it'd prevent the seat from moving backwards... I believe the door subs in the C5 are 8", so if they have a smaller size (I'm too tired to check), it'd be an interesting option for a stock replacement. I hate Bose, but I'm going to try to keep that head unit up there even if it doesn't work....I don't want to worry about someone seeing a stereo they'd want to steal.
Believe it or not, Pioneer has those slim speakers too and they got a better review in "Car Audio" magazine. Your Corvette's doors are huge inside, you do not need the slimline IMO
since you're into racing i would design a system that was easily removable. an amp with some molex connectors for quick disconnection and a box in the rear center storage bin or a bazooka tube.
Scott, I'll definitely go with removable components wherever it's practical. I'm sure I'll leave the head unit and main speakers in to help me get psyched before runs.
