Default Wiring kenwood Navigation... Help Needed

Hey guys
Im in the process of hooking up my navigation unit (Kenwood KNA-DV4100) and have a couple questions:

1) Where does the car speed signal wire (white) hook up to?(what is this for?)

2) Where does the reverse dectection wire (pink) hook up to?

3) Where are u guys installing the antenna? I was thinking behind the taillights...would that work?

1) i'm not sure where to tap into this one. what it's for is most likely for when you lose sat lock (going under a bridge) it will 'guess' as to where you are.

2) reverse detection wire, i'm not sure about this one but i'm guessing you just tap off your reverse lights for a 12v power source... i'm guessing this is a switch for a rear view camera?

3) most commonly behind the taillights

Maybe I can get away with not hooking these wires up... hmmm

You need all these wires. The VSS wire tells the navigation how fast you are going. It is what is needed for several processes like informing the driver of how long it is estimated to take to get from point A to point B. You need to hook up to the reverse wire so the nav unit knows the car is going backwards. The VSS wire only tells the nav the car is in motion. Tap into the reverse light with this wire.

I do believe the VSS wire is at the BCM in the passenger side wheel well and is a white wire. I am not positive which plug it is in or which pin. I will see if I can find out.

The antenna can go in the rear bumper but place it on a piece of metal. Your radio might have come with a small square of metal this is what you place the antenna on. If it did not a thin gauge 4"x4" piece will work.

I have a '04 with an AVIC-N1. The VSS connection comes from C2 pin 50 on the PCM. We traced this wire to the inside of the car. From what I remember, there were 2 grn/wht wires that were tested. Anyway, we found the correct one and tied into it. I drove around without the VSS connected for about 8 months. The VSS does not need to be connected. If it is connected, GPS drift and temparary loss of sat due to tunnels or heavy folage will be kept to a minimum and 3D nav will be initiated (3D Nav - takes care of slope calculations). As stated above, the reverse connection goes to the reverse back-up lights. Normally used to automaticly turn on the rear camera if installed. I haven't connected that one yet. I don't think it was really worth connecting the VSS. The drift has been eliminated, but so what! I don't do instrument approaches in this thing, just in the jet!! Just one more note, drift is only really noticable when you are stopped (with No VSS connection).

i have the AVIC-N1 also and didn't connect the VSS or the reverse detection wire and it works just great, very accurate, BUT, this is because the Pioneer unit has accelerometers that allow it to work in what i calls "Hybrid" mode. this mode uses the accels to detect motion and calculate velocity, acceleration, direction, etc. i don't know if other units have this same capability.

i have both my XM and nav antennas mounted on the dash, tucked up in the front corner. have gotten great reception there. will probably change them to behind the taillight though this weekend since i'll be installing a new XM controller (switching to Pioneer unit from Roady2) in the back and moving my Nav controller box from the front to back also.
