I just finished wiring up 2x75 amp in my '71 and as soon as I turn it on, I hear a little music and then sizzle - the 25A fuse in the amp fries. Tried it three times with the same result. This is the first time that I have installed anything like this, so I probably made a mistake along the way. Here's what I did so far:
I used 8 guage power wire connected to the +ve terminal of the battery. I've run it through an in line fuse with a 30A fuse in it (this one has not fried yet, just the one in the amp). The ground is also 8 guage wire and connected it to the negative terminal of the battery. I'm not sure if this is OK, however, I figured that the ground off the battery is grounded to the chassis only 2 ft away so there was no sense running a parallel line going to the same point. I also ran a small wire from the radio fuse in the fuse box to the remote input on the amp. I used 18 guage wire for the speakers. I've connected a portable CD player to the amp using 3.5 mm stereo cable converted to RCA output. I don't plan on using a head unit.
Any comments or things to check would be appreciated.
How many speakers have you connected to the amp? I would disconnect the speakers and the RCA cables from the amp and then put a new fuse in. If the fuse blows again there is an issue with the amp, if the fuse does not blow there is an issue with either the input or the output. Start by checking the speakers. Then connect them, if fuse blows you have a speaker problem, if it does not you have an input problem. You just have to eliminate possible problems.
