Single din center channel speaker:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-fX76cSv...p?i=500SBS05DC

Although I'm not running moblie video, I could run this from the speaker level outputs from my HU for better imaging. It would also fill in the pocket under the HU in the C6 since its a true double din opening.

For the price, its worth giving it a try. Any thoughts?

Sweet!
One company had a 1/2 DIN sized center channel. It was either JL Audio or JBL. Saw it in the Car Stereo Cookbook. I've been thinking about something that size with a 1 DIN deck. No need to file anything down then.

I think I'll pick one up and give it a try. I'm running front comps from an amp and no rears at all. If i hook up the rear speaker level outputs from the HU to this speaker, I can "fade" in how much center channel I want.

Check if it has 1 speaker wire or 2. If it only has 1, you'll need a HU with a center channel or you'll only be able to send a left or right channel to it.
Maybe HU speaker wires can be bridged to form a mono channel? I don't remember if that can be done or not.

Hmm, good idea. I'll find out and let you know if it has a single or dual wire input.

I don't think you can bridge the speaker level outputs together w/out risk of damaging the chip.

do not try to bridge a HU
Clarion made a center channel like this, had like five 1/2" drivers
In a "true" 5.1 set-up, all 5 main speakers should be the same. We all know that seldom happens. I say go for it, let us know the results

A center channel speaker can and often does have a negative effect on the system. The problem is there is no information recorded on a CD for the center speaker...a DVD does have information for center. The CD has information for left or right and what will happen is information that is intended for one side will be sent to the center speaker. Often a recording artist will have information only on the left side...let's say a guitar solo...that will not sound correct because it will also be coming out of the center speaker.

Years ago every competion car had a center channel. But as we learned what proper staging is and proper speaker placement the center channels were removed. Now they are coming back because of 5.1 and mobile video.

Randy, I hear you. According to the tech guys at crutchfield, this speaker does have two inputs. I couldn't find any information on Alpine's website. I'm assuming they made the wiring flexible for either HU or mono amp installations. The "woofers" cant be more than 3" apart, with the tweet in the center.

I'm hoping to lift the stage more than center it. Plus it will get rid of the stupid pocket in the dash. I'm going to mount the speaker over the HU and run it from the rear speaker level outputs (in stereo). I'll have the ability to independently set the HPF and use the fader control to dial in how much center I want. That combined with the time correction, should net an interesting result.

I'll take pics of the progress. The speaker will be here tomorrow, and I just ordered a double din install kit.

That's an expensive experiment. I hope and want to know if it works out.
I would call Crutchfield back and ask if it could be returned if it dosen't measure up to expectations.
Also, you will probably need some inline bass blockers (they might have them already installed) since those 2" woofers won't be able to put out squat for bass and will sound incredibly harsh without that blocked signal.
Good luck
