Default New System Recommendations

Ok, audiophiles. I have seen a lot of recommendations on this thread for Alpine models. One thing I haven't seen is Blaupunkt. These were very popular in my BMW days. They have quite a few models in Crutchfields. Any scoop on those vs. Alpine? Also, when I enter my car/make/model/year on the Crutchfield's site, under the installation tips area, it always says, "The 8" woofers will be lost if the factory radio is replaced." Is this true? Or will you be able to use the adapter that I've seen mentioned in other posts? All of this may be a moot point since I will probably not attempt the install myself but it would be good to know.

Without some kind of 3rd party adapter, yes the door woofers will not work with a new head unit.

Personally I like Blaupunkt, but lots of people think their quality has suffered over the years.

about the adapter. I've never worked with Blaupunkt and hardly ever see them installed. That doesn't mean they are not good, just means they are not common.

For me its a toss up between Alpine and Eclipse. I'd proably put Pioneer right after those.

Default Update

I just got back from the installer's and I've decided to go with the Alpine CDA-9820XM. I know it is not as cool as the 9853 or 9855 but I like the fact that the XM controller is built in. In my other car I pretty much listen to XM exclusively. I know I'll probably get flamed for not doing this myself but quite honestly, if I started it, I would have ended up taking it in to get done afterward anyway (similar to a washing machine I attempted to fix several years ago). I'm probably paying a little too much $658 installed with XM antenna, and the adapter for the Bose...but that didn't seem like too much. The good thing is the installer has a lifetime warranty on their installation. I know that may not mean much but I've driven by this company for about 10 years now so I don't think they are going anywhere. Thanks for all the help from the various responders to my posts and this thread was an excellent reference that helped me be somewhat knowledgeable while I was shopping. You guys rock!!

Very nice HU! I have an eclipse (5444). Four tweeters and a mid-range up front, two 6 1/2's in the doors, factory's behind the seats (very low power so the sound dances across the dash, not through your head), 12" sub in the back, twin amps running it.
