Default Sub box mock up - progress pics

Trust me when I say, I got a few hours in this sub box fabrication.

It fits in very nicely, will mount via the factor tabs in place of the plastic trim panel I removed (and via friction), it'll hold an 8" sub, access to the rear storage area is maintained and the top still goes down without any interference!

I've fabbed most of the box up with mdf, but in order to fit tight against the wheel well, fiberglass is a must.

Clay allowed me to get a smoother transition, I just masked right over the clay

Wet out completed

I'll be doing the face and speaker ring on Monday

Double checking the air volume. I'll be adding another air pocket to the the box on Monday to up the volume ~.12 cu ft.

Here's my cardboard template framing the amp. It'll be at an angle and the front will match up to the sub box front.

Lots of work to get the box in there just right and allow enough space for the amp rack support without interfering with the storage cover.

And finally, a shot with the speaker ring set in place. This ring will only frame out the sub's grill, another ring will be added for actually mounting the speaker.

Now keep in mind, I'm fabricating everything you see so I can make molds of the parts and then lay up pure fiberglass parts (mdf mounting rings included; with T-Nuts ).

Goodnight!

looking great though it took me awhile to figure out the pics, I'm a little slow :o
This maybe a dumb question, but did you do alittle researh time on speaker placement? Most trunk mounted subs appear to acheive better results when facing the rear of the car, but not all, maybe the C5 vert maybe a exception car. Either way, you'll have a great sub box

I applaud you for the patience you have to make everything the way you want. It'll be a great feeling when you're done.

Nice house BTW.

I had to take 2 looks at the pics too. Didn't realize it was a vert the first time. Progress looks great. From the pics, that sub looks more than 8". Keep 'em coming.

I'll take some further back shots next time for orientation.

The ring in the pics above was cut to frame the speaker grille, so the diameter is much bigger than the cut-out for an 8" sub. I had to cut the ring two more time this morning to get is "JUST" right.

Here's a pic with the new ring and the grille set in place. I clear the convertible top by a good 3/8" now.

After everything has been fit and adjusted for the 48th time, I finally decided I need a tighter fit against my speaker panel. So I added a layer of fiberglass putty to the sub box and set her in place again.

Thanks for the compliment on my house Daniel. Right now (and for the past 3 months) my garage is trashed. Saw dust everywhere.

I think I'm finally ready to mold the face of the box. I've transferred all of the panel shapes and cut out, routed and sanded all the pieces for the other side. So with any luck, the other side show go together much quicker.

No research performed. I'm only using an 8" sub and I've seen several installation of 8" subs facing into a car's interior, some even behind the seats. Hopefull it'll all be okay.

Yes.

6-1/2" momo components up front
5-1/4" momo coax in the rear
& 8" momo dvc subs

2 audiobahn amps and a sony head unit.

I wonder if I'll ever get everything built so I can finally install the hardware?

Will do!

By the end of July, I really hope all of the mock up parts complete so I finally can cast all of the molds . . . and actually make the real parts.

I have new wheels coming in the next 3-4 weeks too and after they arrive, I'll have to start working on building some custom flares to cover the 345's out back. I want my wheels, but if they run an extra week or two, it'd be a good thing for the stereo project.

Oh yeah, and we have a baby coming ~ Oct 17th.
