Default XM is static free - FM broadcast is not.

There would be no static coming from the source. Satellite radio will simply cut out if the signal is low. I assume you are using the built-in FM transmitter. What model is it? I have the Roady XT and the built-in FM transmitter is much better than the iTrip that I have for my iPod. Try changing the broadcast frequency from the XM unit and tune your stereo to match. You may have interference from a local radio station on the station you are using right now.
