not sure if it has been discussed or even thought of before, but i didnt feel like searching, and i am curious as hell..
i have a 2002 z06 with all audio stock. i actually like the way the stock bose system sounds and i love the appearance of the stock unit in the dash. the only thing i dont like is that the deck does not play mp3's. herein lies the question..
has anyone tried to modify the stock unit to process mp3 discs? i was thinking along the lines of maybe changing out the optical pickup and maybe some other internal pieces and then it could possibly work?
get a cd changer that can interface with your stock h/u and can also play mp3's. check out the c5 techtips section and possibly the c5 audio faq (not sure if i put it in there and i dont feel like searching either )
Sounds like a good challenge for someone really into that kind of tinkering, but I'd have a backup plan in case things go FUBAR.
In fact, I have a bose cassette HU I'll sell you cheap if things go horribly wrong... It doens't play MP3s, but it's got this great technology... once you fill up the tape, you can FLIP IT OVER and fill up the other side! What will they think of next!?!
i am pretty good with electronics, thanks to my military training, all i need to know is what part of the radio processes music, and what part would recognize an mp3 disc. im sure it wouldnt be TOO difficult to find on my own, but i havent really looked into it yet, i was hoping someone had already attempted it.
Any part that can run some sort of computer operating system, read the file system on an ISO formatted CD, reprograms the keys on the stock head unit to allow you to traverse the songs and folders on the CD, and includes an MP3 decoder.
