Default Reducing sub box volume

I bought a Subthump box and it has approx 1 cu ft volume. I have an Infinity Perfect 10.1D, and it wants to see .6 cu/ft.

Does stuffing the box with insulation increase or decrease the way the sub sees the box volume?

Are there any tricks to making the sub think the box is the right size?

As the box is sealed up, there is not much I can do to fill up .4 cu/ft other than fill it with dirt.

Ideas?

Also, there are not many 10" subs that like 1 cu/ft, what do most do with the Subthump box?

See if you can take your Perfect 10 back and pick up the Perfect 10D VQ which has an adjustable pole piece to accomodate different sized boxes (1.0 is their biggest). I believe that it handles more watts as well.

Not a lot of 10's like that big a box that I have found most recommend between .60 and .75 sealed. Image Dynamics 10 IDQ is an option as well. I am going to go with a 12 IDQ myself as the box is a tiny bit smaller and with the woofer displacement I should get right about .85 sealed and be right near the sweet spot for the woofer.

I don't personally have any experience with the subthump although I have used this box as a reference while shopping for a sub. I may end up making my own box a little smaller for a 10" but I have not made my decision yet or just pick up the 10" subthump stealth and get one of the woofers I mentioned.

If the box is NOT a stealth style (one that sits below flush) than I believe that you can get a JL 10w6 in there. Shoot the guy from subthump an email and ask him what he likes in his box.

Stuffing the box makes the woofer think it is in a larger box that it actually is ... due to the interference that the polyfill creates as the wavelength travels inside the box. (think that is the correct description)

hmmm.. you could fill it with some expandable foam then fiberglass over it to make the box smaller. maybe get some blocks of wood, 4x4's and liquid nail em in there? or make it a ported box? ...just some ideas.

Thx for the ideas, I might just cut the box on the bottom and remove some of the volume. I don't really want to add any more weight to the box, so I think cutting into it will be best.

I can possibly close off some of the sloped part.

fiberglass shouldn't add any noticable weight but cutting it will do the trick too. just make sure you secure it solidly and make it airtight. if you're unsure it is a good idea to mix up some fiberglass resin and coat the inside of the box with it.
